Which do you prefer: Platoon or Full Metal Jacket?

I know that may be a silly question, and a difficult one to answer. It's like having to choose between Goodfellas and Casino.

But I've thought long and hard about this, and I'm gonna have to go with Full Metal Jacket. The battle scenes are just so much more intense and realistic, as far as a Vietnam era flick goes. But Platoon is also still really good. But I think Full Metal Jacket is the winner of that genre.

IMO these two movies can't and shouldn't be compared is a "vs" scenario.

One starts out in theater without a boot camp...and it has a true "bad guy" our hero must confront.

The other is really 2 movies (with a boot camp)...and it doesn't have a true "bad guy" for our hero to confront.

I'd probably compare to Platoon to Apocalypse Now instead ...they both feel more like a journey.

Joker goes on a journey in FMJ. He doesn't take anything seriously until the end, when he kills the sniper.

"The battle scenes are just so much more intense and realistic"

Really? One of the most common criticism of FMJ is how phony the Vietnam segment looks.

Platoon. But Full Metal Jacket isn't far behind.

reply

Platoon is much better.

No contest: Full Metal Jacket.

reply

Why “no contest”?

reply

Because I heavily favor one film more than the other. Was this a trick question?

reply

Thought perhaps you wouldn’t mind elaborating as to why.

Platoons is better. It may be melodramatics but it got good battle scene, good act from Berenger & Dafoe, good dialogues.

FMJ is film in england and you can tells. no atmospheres. it also has no likable character. not one. i dislike them all. good film need likable character. platoon has eliass and taylor and king. what do FMJ have? all loser!!

reply
