Will Cobra Kai Fans Give this Another Chance?

I wonder if fans of Cobra Kai will appreciate this more since it gave us Terry Silver who ended up being the best villain in the series. I saw this as a kid so I always loved it despite or rather, because of it's cheesier elements.

reply

He’s already widely regarded as the best villain of the original trilogy. Purists know this is the best film in the franchise.

reply

Terry Silver wasn’t the villain though he was the protagonist!

reply

Oh dear, you just contradicted yourself.

reply

A villain to Daniel but a hero to the audience. The film’s subversive nature can create confusion.

reply

It really can't. It's very straight forward.

reply

...always loved it because of it's...cheesier elements

You talking mac n cheese? Are we dealing with some kind of homoeroticism here?

reply

I’ve gone back and rewatched the trilogy. This one is still the weakest of the three but there was at least some appreciation of it.

reply

I always liked it. Not my favorite Karate kid. But each film got a bit more outrageous than the last. Which is exactly the same way the series is going. Each season is more outrageous than the last.

reply

Ralph Macchio explains how Karate Kid III was retroactively saved by Cobra Kai as it breathed new life into the original characters of the film.

reply

Even Cobra Kai acknowledged how stupid this movie is.

From the mouth of Terry Silver himself:

"I stepped away from my multimillion-dollar company for months just so I could terrorize a teenage karate champion."

"I was doing a lot of coke then."

reply

Silver valued his friendship with Kreese over Dynatox. He was loyal to his core.

reply

And coked up to the eyeballs. Also, his loyalty soon vanished when he set Kreese up didn't it?

reply

And coked up to the eyeballs.

It’s curious that the Cobra Kai writers would smear Silver’s legacy while completely ignoring Daniel’s own drug use. Even the late great Gene Siskel speculated on national television that Daniel (perhaps even Macchio himself) was high on cocaine.

As entertaining as the show can be, don’t think the writers ever properly understood Kreese and Silver’s dynamic. They were brothers for life who would never let a feud with Miyagi-do come between them.

A more realistic show would have had Johnny, Barnes, Chozen, Silver and Kreese forming an alliance to put Daniel down. The series should end with Daniel in an opium den back in 1985, revealing all the events to have been his hallucination.

Not really since there is no mention of Daniel doing drugs

Well that's just your opinion so consider it dismissed.

Not sure how you factor Kreese in to that.

I admit that would be funny. Unrealistic, but funny.

reply

Coming from a downtrodden area like Durham, you should know the tell tale signs of cocaine use. We’ve been through this argument before and analyzed Daniel’s skittish behavior yet you remain in denial about your boy hero.

Well that's just your opinion so consider it dismissed.

Scientific research shows that Silver would never betray Kreese.

reply

At 3.18 Gene was going to mention Daniels Cocaine use. Since it was a family show, Ebert just answered “uh one note?”

But Gene isn't in the movie is he? Therefore it is an opinion and no more. Consider it dismissed.

reply

You think you know more about film analysis than Gene Siskel?

reply

I'm saying that there is no mention of Daniel being on drugs. Gene Siskels opinion is neither here nor there since it is never mentioned (unlike Silver)

reply

Didn’t you read the novel? Daniels cocaine use is explicitly in there.

reply

Nope it isn't. You can sell it all you want, but you made that up.

reply

NRC provided direct quotes from the text.

reply

No.

reply

Siskel lived through the highs of 80s showbiz culture and knew a coke addict when he saw one.

It’s been well documented that Macchio was going through a difficult time in his personal and professional lives during this period:

“According to Robyn Lively, working with Ralph Macchio was difficult at times: he would be late to the set and/or complain about certain aspects of the movie.”

Given the mountain of evidence, it’s safe to conclude that Macchio was high on cocaine and it leaked into his performance.

reply

I heard there was an incident on set when Ralph Macchio requested a scene where Daniel snorts a line of coke off Jessica’s ass. Robyn Lively refused to do the scene and insisted that the role be rewritten.

reply

Heard that story too except with a line of macaroni and cheese powder.

reply

Daniel likely mixed cocaine powder with Mac and cheese powder to create a special blend. Why he insisted on snorting it off Jessica’s ass was anyone’s guess…. maybe the novel goes into greater detail.

reply

“Wait til he hears about this one. This is wild!”

reply

Coming from a downtrodden area like Durham,

Hahaha! Shows how little you know.

Is Durham a beautiful place?
The Durham Dales incorporating Teesdale, Weardale and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a European and UNESCO Global Geopark are definitely sights to behold - peaceful, rich and varied landscapes of moors and hills, valleys and rivers, dotted with picturesque villages.

Scientific research shows that Silver would never betray Kreese.

It was once scientifically proven that bumblebees shouldn't be able to fly according to the laws of physics. This also is wrong.

reply

You seem proud of Durham. Do you consider yourself the “bad boy of Durham?” Doesn’t have the same ring to it as Bad Boy of LA.

reply

Proud has nothing to do with it. Simply pointing out that 'your ' comment is bullshit.

reply

This is Durham.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durham,_North_Carolina

reply

That's Durham in the USA not UK.

reply

Maybe in the USA it should be called "New Durham?" It would avoid this sort of mix-up.

reply

There was no mix up...except from you.

reply

You should have specified you were talking about Durham UK and not Durham USA.

reply

I didn't need to specify anything. It was you in your NRC123 disguise who mentioned me coming from the Durham area.

Put that down as another win for me.

reply

You’re wrong again about bumblebees too. https://www.businessinsider.com/bees-cant-fly-scientifically-incorrect-2017-12?amp Another win for the Kai against WA.

reply

Except I'm not wrong. You should have read the post properly instead of jumping in. I said it was wrong that bumblebees are scientifically unable to fly (just like it is wrong that Silver would never turn on Kreese). Or are you saying otherwise?

reply

Your exact words were it was once scientifically proven that bumble bees shouldn’t be able to fly. No such thing was ever “proven”.

reply

French entomologist August Magnan showed that it was physically impossible. The thing was he was under the general misconception at the time that bees flapped their wings up and down (which in that case they wouldn't be able to fly). It's called not having all the information to hand ( a bit like you really).

reply

He didn't "prove" anything. He made a baseless claim and was proven wrong... a bit like YOU really.

reply

But he did. He proved that bumblebees technically shouldn't be able to fly based on (so not baseless) using the flapping motion everyone at the time (1930) believed they used. It was only through stop motion cameras years later that the true nature of how bees flapped their wings became apparent. Thus his theory was shown to be inaccurate.
A bit like your theory that Silver would never betray Kreese....because HE DID!

reply

"So the next time someone (like WA) tells you a bee shouldn't be able to fly, you should inform them that this is merely a myth perpetuated by popular culture and well known fraud Magnan. In reality, bees simply create mini-hurricanes wherever they go, which is a lot easier to get your head around."

reply

Once again you say I claim a bee shouldn't be able to fly when I clearly stated that someone else actually said it.

Why are you lying? Or are you just being obtuse?

reply

What? What did you call me?

reply

Plagiarising Shawshank Redemption now.

reply

Son you are forgetting yourself.

reply

Change the record

reply

I visited and it was a shithole. The brochures lied.

reply

I visited...

Liar.

and it was a shithole.

Anything but.

The brochures lied.

No. The only liar here is you. But then there's nothing unusual there.

reply

I’ve never heard anyone say “I’m going to Durham on vacation.”

reply

What do people in Durham do if they want to study Cobra Kai? Durham is 6000 miles from the Valley.

reply

Guess they learn Karate from Steven Beresford (Chief Instructor of Junsui Karate) instead.

reply

And yet over 3 million tourists visit every year.
Guess your finger isn't on the tourist pulse then eh?

reply

What tourist attractions does Durham have to offer?

Driving through the county on the way to somewhere better does not constitute a visit. The real number is probably closer to triple figures.

reply

What tourist attractions does Durham have to offer?

Look it up

reply

You can’t even name one?

reply

Maybe we should buy the deed to the village of Durham and proceed to bulldoze it to the ground! We’ll turn over the deed to the villagers only if WA agrees to a final showdown.

reply

Would wears risk his life for his village?

reply

Durham is a city, and I don't live there.

reply

Would you risk your life for Darlington’s survival.

reply

I'd risk my life for my wife and kids. Darlington is more than capable of looking after itself, but I'd happily join the cause.

reply

Durham Cathedral

reply

That’s all well and good but I’m talking about fun stuff. Perhaps generations past produced some quality architecture but the county has been on the decline. Modern Britain has left Durham behind.

reply

Durham has become a hip city with lots of performing arts, new coffee shops, breweries, and restaurants. This has carried over to the music scene as well with tons of great new artists performing live all around the city.

There you go.

reply

😂

Did you copy and paste that from its tourism board website? Sounds like cheap PR designed to lure unsuspecting tourists to its third rate social scene. Truly hip people don’t use the word hip.

reply

Yes. But you asked and there it is.

I myself have had some good days out in Durham and a particular event is the annual Miners Gala. There are a lot of bars and restaurants and one bar claims to be the smallest Gin bar in the world. Down by the waterfront is very nice with also bars and restaurants. A lot of people visit Durham because it is easily accessible being on the main line between London and Edinburgh. Now the hip comment is most likely aimed at the massive student population at Durham University.
Now none of this may float your boat but Durham City is one of the most visited in the UK. So despite your premise that it is a shit hole, Durham City is classed as a beautiful city and the castle and cathedral have been designated a UNESCO world heritage site.

reply

You sound like Daniel giving Miyagi a tour through the Crap Shack, getting excited over termite-infested pieces of wood and convinced the ghetto area is “up and coming.”

It’s irresponsible of you to promote Durham as a tourist destination here on the board, misleading the public into thinking its a nice place to visit.

reply

You know what? You are the complete arsehole. You call Durham City ( a place you've never even visited) a shithole and challenge me to point out any tourist points of interest. Not happy with that you ask for fun things for visitors to do. Presented with that you then compare it to Daniel giving Miyagi a tour of the crapshack.
Instead of asking these questions and then ignoring or complaining about the replies, just visit the place for yourself seeing as you are constantly saying you are coming over here.

reply

I’ve been to Darlington myself and wasn’t impressed. Your like the Qatari government, inviting the world to sample your country with empty promises of a good time and modern facilities only to swindle people.

If one of your buddies from the board were visiting, where would you take them?

reply

I’ve been to Darlington myself and wasn’t impressed.

No you haven't.

Your like the Qatari government, inviting the world to sample your country with empty promises of a good time and modern facilities only to swindle people.

No one in Darlington is doing that. Besides we were talking about Durham City not Darlington.

If one of your buddies from the board were visiting, where would you take them?

The pub.

reply

What’s the pub like? Do US military stationed in the UK frequent it? Maybe they bet on ice breaking contests?

reply

No US military stationed near Darlington.

reply

If you saw some US military in a Durham pub betting on ice breaking would you strut over to them all cocky and tell them how it’s done?

reply

Samgerard: “What’s going on in here?”

Wears: “This bad place. We don’t want to go in here.”

reply

Sam Gerard: But he looks so strong! WA: No ya gotta be strong here not here it doesn’t make a difference!” US G.I.: You think you can do better big mouth? You think you can do better? Drop some ice!

reply

Why would you think that?
I couldn't care less about a bunch of US military guys breaking ice.

reply

Could you break all 6 ice blocks?

reply

Ice doesn't hit back

reply

I give 3 to 1 odds WA break all six!

reply

He’ll just pretend to meditate while waiting for the ice to melt. Oldest trick in the book.

reply

Sam Gerard just bet $600 that WA breaks all six. 3 to 1 odds I cannot cover that….

reply

You are covered.

reply

WA: The guy was twice my size and only got through 2 of them what am I supposed to do?

reply

Do the crane Ally boy.

reply

I tried it a couple years ago. Still unwatchable.
