Was This Supposed To Be A Comedy?!

I love the first two films. Have watched them umpteen times. Both absolute masterpieces.

Started watching III last night and I. Was. Stunned. It's not just bad, it's like MSTK3K bad.

The biggest drama in this film is Michael Corleone's diabetes.

reply

Ain't that the truth! Wilford Brimley must've been jealous [grumbling] Diabeetus is my thing.

Congrats on 2K posts.

Thanks, friend! Joined in 2020 and have always enjoyed the MC community. You're one of the best on here.

Aw, shucks.

It's like they got sucked into the vortex of the "Trilogy" at the time instead of saying No to this

Really did seem like a paycheck movie for Pacino & Keaton. And apparently, Coppola had lots of debts to pay.

reply

I rewatched it last year.

Over the decades it seems to have gone through a re-evaluation from 'bloody awful' to 'not as good as the first two but not nearly as bad as people say it is'. But, no, it's still bloody awful. It's like a horrible glossy soap opera. The acting is dreadful (Not just Sofia). The dialogue is terrible. Just the whole narrative is misconceived.

And the 'Coda' edit only demonstrates that it doesn't matter how he cuts the film, it's just an unnecessary cash-grab that no-one's heart was in.

reply

Sad finale. Especially since the first two were so masterful.

I rewatched twice in the past few years and agree with you. As for Sofia, she gets way too much blame, her dad, Al Pacino, Andy Garcia, and the other superstars couldn't make the film work. George Hamilton? I think he is great, but not in a GF film.

Putting this in the same category as movies like Red Zone Cuba or Giant Spider Invasion seems a bit mad to me, even if you don't like it. I think perhaps people are getting a little carried away.

I agree with people who think it's not even a bad movie and fell victim to extremely high expectations, though. Maybe the people who like it tend to be a bit quieter because the haters are so vehement, lol. I especially liked Garcia as son of Sonny. Maybe they should have made his character more of the focus.

"Zaza!"

They're definitely getting carried away. It's simply not that bad. Personally, I prefer III to II for several reasons; for instance, Pacino's character has more dimension.

reply

We have found the one person in the person in the world who prefers Godfather III to II. You are truly sui generis!

I saw all three back-to-back a few years ago, all of which were written by the same two people: Mario Puzo and Francis Ford Coppola. Michael Corleone (Pacino) has much more human dimension in Part III as opposed to his one-note grim depiction in Part II. His scenes confessing his sins to a priest in a Vatican City garden and, later, with Kay in Sicily are good examples. There are other highlights amidst the drama, like the break-in scene at Vincent's abode, the Atlantic City massacre, the street festival hit, the entire closing opera sequence that juxtaposes the performances of the play with various violent attacks and the aftermath.

Also, Andy Garcia brings fresh blood and vitality to the trilogy in a pretty significant role, as does Sofia in a relatively small part. I heard all the ridiculous criticism over Sofia's performance and therefore kept waiting for a serious train wreck, but it never happened. She did a fine job for a side character who's an unseasoned, slightly self-conscious (i.e. wooden), flirty teen.

Agree to disagree. Variety of opinion is the spice of life. It's one of the reasons I like MC so much.

reply

It’s enjoyable. Of course it’s not up to 1 & 2 levels, but if it were released today, it would win Best Picture.

What would beat it? Super Batman 47?

reply

It wouldn't meet the new Diversity Requirements for Best Picture. 🤣

Rifftrax should riff on it (unless they already did).

reply

Watched the Coda edit just recently. I don't remember what's the difference was compared to the original theatrical cut, except the ending, but it felt better.

reply

Shockingly shit. In front and behind the camera. The whole thing dropped the ball.
