Was this a time when race did not matter?

A time when film was free from virtue signaling, wokeness. race, evil whites? A time when you saw the person and not their genetic makeup? A time when whites wasn’t embarrassed to be white.

reply

It mattered a hell of a lot less than it does now. Democrats created and maintained segregation up to the 1960s, and now they're bringing it all back.

reply

They are. I'm still in awe at the audacity when they claim to be "anti-racist."

Would someone ever claim to be, say, "anti-cruel"? Isn't that just taken for granted?

So why would someone feel the need to announce they're "anti-racist," or "anti-facist"? Isn't that the same thing as saying, "I'm not a racist, but..."?

reply

Anti racist means you stand up and fight against racism. It's not enough to just not be racist any more. Silence is Violence.

reply

People were "stand(ing) up and fight(ing) against racism" long before you were born. Get the fuck over yourself. If you have to announce you're 'anti' something, it actually means you're the opposite.

reply

Ok…I was just giving you a definition. I never said I was anti racist, nor did I give an opinion on it.

reply

WOW...YOU CAME ACROSS FAIRLY DUMB HERE.🙂

reply

To an idiot like you, anything seems dumb.

reply

AWW...RUBBER & GLUE...GOOD FOR YOU.😘

reply

I find the lack of thought in your responses disturbing.

HOW MUCH THOUGHT WENT INTO YOUR RESPONSE?🤣

reply

We're not talking about my responses, we're talking about yours.

reply

I TYPE LIKE I SPEAK...QUICK AND FREQUENTLY.

reply

Ok, I'll accept that.

reply

It mattered a hell of a lot less than it does now. Democrats created and maintained segregation up to the 1960s, and now they're bringing it all back.

you Republikkkans took the Ideals of KKK and ran with it the Unite The Rally 2017 and The Unjust Murder of George Floyd we trying to have everyone at the seat of the table unlike you also this film stereotypes of as Hoodrats when the opposite is more true also doesn't American stereotypes bother you?!

reply

Ehh, sort of.

It was a lot more grounded in its depiction of race than today's films. Meaning, they showed blacks in bad neighbourhoods were criminals and that White guys could be the heroes and overcome the stereotypes that blacks had of them (viz., Woody's character actually clearing the dunk).

I haven't watched this film in ages, but from what I remember there was no virtue signaling, wokeness, and Woody's character certainly wasn't depicted as evil, nor lectured upon for his race like in today's movies. He was lectured to about other things but it had to do with his character traits, which were, quite frankly, awful.... especially his gambling addiction (so yeah, in some ways the movie was more about character than race).

reply

yes you are correct 1992 may as well be 992AD by how much thing have change in movies since this movie come out. this movie never get made today. product of its time.

it also help woody and wesley best friend in real life. chemistry ooze off screen. it is ultimate bros before hos movie. no race just two peoples who like each other - woketards take note this is what makes life worth live they become friend because both character wrote well and act well not because they chose on race.

reply

In 2023 the movie poster would be deemed extremely racist as the white man is more visible than the black dude! It would be considered “disgusting”

reply

oh look another brand new hard right extremist white-is-right account

babbling about race and perceived woke threat

So are you new here , or just a sock account?

Is word of moviechat's easygoing attitudes to free speech and tolerence of extremist bigots getting round to the other hives of racist propaganda ,
like Donald's truth thing , or stormfront or whatever

reply

I don't think that's the point the poster is trying to make at all. A lot of people (including me) that don't consider themselves political are still anti-woke. I agree the word "woke" has been overused, but the "woke" mindset is just something that can make things worse. When someone tries really hard to be antiracist, it can just make them seem racist.

reply

ANTI-WOKE...LMAO...SO YOU ARE ANTI-WOMEN...ANTI-GAY...ANTI-TRANS...ANTI-BROWN SKIN...WONDERFUL FOR YOU...I GUESS...PRETTY SHITTY FOR THE STATE OF THE WORLD.

reply

So you think it's good to be woke? Even though it's clearly done more damage than good? Social pandering and critical race theory are dividing us more than bringing people together. Go ahead, slap a bunch of labels simply because you disagree with me. I think it's pretty sad that I seem to have a better understanding of these things as a young woman than an adult man. You can't call me "anti-brown skin" or "anti-women" when I've clearly spoken out against racism and sexism on these boards. People of all backgrounds, genders, races, and political stances have fought against the "woke culture," so your view on the subject is very shallow.

reply

YOU CAN STOP PLAYING THE YOUNG WOMAN CARD...YOU BLEW THAT BLUFF LONG AGO...YOU ARE JUST ANOTHER PATHETIC NECKBEARD WHO THINKS THEIR SHITTY OPINIONS WILL BE SWALLOWED EASIER IF SAID BY A GIRL.🙂

reply

I think it's actually funny you don't believe I'm a girl. I promise you I'm not a guy. The "neckbeard" name calling is a bit ironic given that you're the middle aged man behind the computer. I don't see any reason to lie about who I am. You're clearly just ignoring me because you don't like the things I'm saying so instead you're insulting me. You're still just slapping labels instead of giving any valid arguments. It's too bad because I thought you were one of the better ones on this site. I would think since you've shared several times that you have a teenage daughter you'd be a little more respectful.

reply

I AM THE BEST THING ON THIS SITE...YOU ARE A SAD LITTLE MAN PLAYING DRESS-UP...YOU HAVE NO ARGUMENT...ONLY THE CONTINUED WHINING OF A THREATENED AND SAD RELIC.

reply

:-/// I gave like ten arguments, but sure pretend they're not there.

I've been rage posting on this board, I need to stop and go back to my homework.

EXACTLY HOW YOUNG OF A GIRL ARE YOU PLAYING ANYWAY?

reply

I meant what I said. I had homework and was avoiding it, that shouldn't be so hard to believe

reply

EXACTLY HOW OLD ARE YOU THEN?🙄

reply

What's the reason you are so keen on knowing my age? I don't mind sharing. I'm a college student who just entered adulthood and left my teenage years. My opinions are not merely limited to my age. I have been visiting this site since I was 14 (the boards closed shortly after I started visiting imdb on a regular basis)

Your sudden hostility towards me is strange, given that other interactions we've had you were respectful of me, even when we shared different beliefs. Resorting to name calling is not a good look. Relax, Kowalski, it's going to be okay.

reply

I LIKE YOU...YOU SEEM LIKE A GOOD GUY...HOWEVER...YOUR INSISTANCE ON POSTING FAKE OUTRAGE TO A FAKE PROBLEM WILL ALWAYS DRAW A RESPONE FROM KOWALSKI™️

reply

Gee, thanks for saying that.... after you insulted me several times?

There was no outrage on my side, you seemed more outraged than me. What was the fake problem? You decided to intervene in my reply to someone else.

reply

SAYING THE W WORD AWAKENS THE KOWALSKI™️

reply

The "W" Word, fine then

reply

dont mind kowalchuck........ he/she/they is just a STUPID FUCK

reply

When someone tries really hard to be antiracist, it can just make them seem racist.

This here is the crux of the matter
kkk types think letting black people on the bus is "trying too hard"
The other extreme think not having a black president is an issue.
where is the line?
Then there are people in the middle who realise that tyhe "balance" is not correct , and want to make changes.
These changes are deemed "crazy woke shit" by whites who see any movement in that direction as a personal attack and start spouting shit like "white man under threat"

Comments like this:
In 2023 the movie poster would be deemed extremely racist as the white man is more visible than the black dude! It would be considered “disgusting”

tell me that the poster is alarmed that black people are now getting leading roles, so he's making up fake imagined outrage to illustrate his percieved threat to the white race . "White men cant jumop" is a strange place to start his musings i feel as it stars wes & woody equally

......
my point is there are not many "extremists" of the woke type , but theres a lot of the other type who dont want to give an inch.
I guess it just depends where people think that line is.

Personally I dont give a shit if the people represented in a movie cast are "diverse" and i dont interpret that as "lefties hate white people" which is a common theme on the politics board if anyone says anything about letting black people on the bus

reply

Yeah, I mean trust me, I get what you're saying for the most part. I didn't really understand your point at first but I think I know what you mean now.

That's one of the biggest problems on this site is that one side is just as extreme as the other. Everyone's so close minded they can't see a little past their own beliefs.

It seems to me the "extremists" are about half and half. I know a lot of people that would be considered "woke," but aren't really. They just want equality. They're not constantly hitting you on the head with their views, but still.... even a small group can be loud and try to speak for all people. That's the reason you have so many individuals, of any political affiliation or none, speaking out against the "mob" as you could call it.

Of course it does make me angry just as much as you that there are so many people on here that hate seeing diversity and people who aren't white in films. A lot of people on this site are just straight up racist and it's honestly disturbing. There's no getting around it. Still, you have to understand that some people aren't mad at diversity because they're racist, but because they know there's an agenda behind it. There are cases where "inclusion" in the media is simply just social pandering. The attempt to try and not seem racist is ironically still racist because they were seeking out certain skin colors just to seem more "appealing." Attitude behind these things matters. The problem enters when people assume there's some hidden message just because there's someone of a different skin color than them on screen when there's absolutely nothing to get upset over.

I'm not sure if I can agree with you on the "poster is alarmed that black people are now getting lead roles." Perhaps. I don't have as much context connected to that statement. I think they're just trying to point out, as we talked about "extremists," that some people will get upset over little things that don't matter.

reply

Not really. It wasn't as extreme then as it is now, but the pattern was already in place. Even the title of this film speaks volumes. I still remember what my friend said on the way out of the theater after we saw it. He's non-white, by the way. He said the title of the film seemed a little offensive, and commented "it's not like someone could get away with making a film called Black Men Can't Think."

The notion was already well in place that whites were inferior in most every way, and this film was but another step on the racist path that led to where we are today.

reply

"Black Men Can't Think" and "White Men Can't Jump" are two very different statements.

reply

Not really. Both are popular stereotypes.

reply

The one you made up is not a popular stereotype, but sure, keep talking.

reply

You're telling me that racists/white supremacists don't think whites are smarter than blacks??

reply

I didn't say that. Nearly everyone on this site makes stuff up.

reply

I'm not making anything up... the "whites are smarter than blacks" stereotype is quite common. Acknowledging that it exists isn't the same as saying you believe it. I don't think one race is smarter than another, but I'm not going to pretend that a LOT of people do.

reply

No, there were still racial issues/stereotypes involved with respect to basketball. Think back to the movie "Airplane" that came out in 1980 and the basketball scene there. More seriously, back in the late 80s, I remember Isiah Thomas and Dennis Rodman causing controversy regarding their comments about Larry Bird (what a series that was...part of the "glory days" of the NBA).

I'm not going to pretend that everything was all rosy back then, because it wasn't. But you didn't have the division back then that you do today. As a "white guy who couldn't jump," you'd think I'd have been a Celtics' fan...but I loved the Lakers and their "Showtime." And no one accused me of "cultural appropriation" or questioned why I rooted for the Lakers. Finally, I will say that I do agree with your line, "A time when you saw the person and not their genetic makeup." I do think that, in general, that was truer then than it is today.

reply

I think Die Hard with a Vengeance did a better job tackling the black/white issue honestly without wokeness.

reply

Valid point regarding DH3, thanks ! However it’s still in the same time period as White men.

reply

Race will always matter to some people, but yes. It seemed like 80s/90s movies were headed in a better direction in regards to race and diversity. That isn't to say there was also a lot of room for improvement. Even up into the 2000s, there were racist stereotypes portrayed in films and the white savior trope really was a big thing. It really didn't seem to matter as much and people weren't as worried as they are now. It went crazy in the 2010s and just went very downhill. The 80s and 90s were a good time to handle racial issues and have diversity because you have to remember it wasn't long after segregation had ended (wasn't it still legal in some states?) I'm not saying now isn't a good time either, but specifically it was a time to make up for those years and show that different races can get along. Of course, looking back, the messages became a bit overdone with the "beep bop racism bad" and that's it.... but it's still a very good message. Even in the 70s when black people started to be featured in films more, it was very shortly after The Civil Rights Movement.

The most annoying thing is that now when they have good opportunism to present diversity and racial issues, they don't put it in those films but instead shove it where it isn't needed (fantasy films/children's movies) instead of drama/romance/comedy/teen films. Not that it should be featured in all those genres either, but the social messaging pushed into all these shows/movies where it isn't needed is so tiring. Nowadays it's like everyone has to point out race. Back then both sides could make fun of each other, and now it's the dumb white guy getting picked on because he's "bad."
