Truly most overated film of all time.

I have seen it three times trying desperately to figure out what makes this film so special but i just reached the conclusion that Fight Club is the most overhyped and overated film of all times since for some reason it is included in the top ten films in imdb.

I understand that everything is a matter of taste but i believe that if it wasnt for Brad Pitt and Edward Norton on the cover (although their acting in the film is both average to say the least) then this movie wouldnt be rated more than 7.5 at best.

Its one of David Fincher's weakest works and i cant believe its rated higher than Seven, The Social Network, Gone Girl and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

I even found Panic Room and The Game more interesting than Fight Club even they are both preety average films.

I personally gave it a 6/10 and got rid of my original dvd copy.

** spoilers maybe **

For me this movie didn't work like a 8.9 rated movie. I kinda feel too it's overrated. Somehow i knew before brad pitt told edward that they were the same people and i didn't find the ending very enjoyable. I believe it must be rated somewhere near Gone Girl is atm. Note the metacritic score for the movie.

That's my general opinion as well. 8.9(Basically a 9/10), rated #10 is just a tad bit much. It's NOT better than Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, The Shining, Heat, Alien, Chinatown and about 100 other films... But, its okay. Its imdb. I love the site but some films are bloated. The Dark Knight, as great as it is, is NOT #4(Last Ranking I saw), nor is 2001 ASO ranked like 82 or something. What's Apocalypse Now and FMJs ranking? I mean, I'll take anything post Lolita or Dr. Strangelove with Kubrick over this film. Talk about THEMES, he was the *beep* MASTER. No Country For Old Men, Jaws, There Will Be Blood and even Se7en, Finchers breakout... But what can I say, im one guy. A million people think otherwise and its okay, because at least its not junk. It is a GOOD Film.

This movie is 16 years old. Over a million imdb.com posters rated this a cumulative 8.9. But I guess we can all go home now, you got this.

reply

What does it being 16 years old have to do with anything? YOU can go home, I DO got this... If you didn't see that ending coming, well, that's your own failure

reply

Hahahaaa! A 16 year-old movie embedded into popular culture and 'somehow you knew they were the same people'? Maybe after seeing 16 years of knock-off twists you 'somehow knew' the ending, which didn't leave you uplifted. While you are at it, why don't you tell us what you think about 'Citizen Kane' and 'Birth of a Nation' and how you rate them through the prism of your eyes in 2015.

Not to mention all the talk of a "twist" too bad they didn't see it without the hype. Definitely my favorite movie and I hated Pitt at the time.

You hate Congress but every election you re-elect YOUR "guy" and wonder why things never change!

reply

Exactly. When I saw the rating and learned how popular it was, I thought that I was going to be mesmerized by this film, which eventually didn't happen.

I admire the technical brilliance of David Fincher, I loved Zodiac and The Social Network. They were stylistically very modern and near perfect comparative to current films. I love the tempo of his films which he achieves through subtle editing and background score showing his grasp on the technical, story-telling aspect of direction.

It was still his early days when he made Fight Club. I think the content itself wasn't as polished as everyone thinks it to be, and everything just seems a little bit over the top, which separates his later works from this one. Technically, it still turned out to be a fairly good attempt.

Overall, I will give it a 7/10. 7 for me, is a very good film, but not excellent. American Beauty, The Dark Knight, The Shawshank Redemption are all 7/10 for me. American Hustle, Eyes Wide Shut, Double Indemnity, A Short Film About Love (1988) are 8/10 for me.

Also, 16 year old is a pretty lame point to argue, the history of cinema dates back to the last decade of the 19th century if I am not wrong. Secondly, those million people you are talking about who have 'collectively' rated this film this high have no real understanding or appreciation of art. Most of them are just blind followers. On this scale, I have to rate something like 2001:A Space Odyssey or Vertigo 13/10, cause when this film can be rated 9/10, then those masterpieces can never be rated anything below that going by your logic.

reply

2001:ASO was a major snooze. Sure, it had lovely space imagery but those scenes ran WAY too long and did nothing to develop the story. Cinema is the art of storytelling visually, 10+min panoramic space porn does not contribute to the story, they would have looked great as stills in a coffee table book... :D

reply

OMFG! Gone Girl is terrible. The story/screenplay is moronic/laughable and the only redeemable thing about the film is its direction and cinematography. Let's see how well GG is rated when it reaches 1.2 million votes.

I'm guessing you haven't seen the Star Wars movies, then.

reply

I wouldn't mind if everyone agreed with you. I can watch it alone.

reply

Yeah. I've come to the conclusion that FIGHT CLUB is the most overrated film of all time. I was considering some of those bloated Tarantino films, but FC takes the cake.

reply

You put Panic Room and The Game in the same league?

The Curious Case of BB and Panic Room are his weakest movies. They are both too on autopilot and lack the layers found in the other movies.

The Game is genius. The more you watch it, the more texture it reveals. It has a design that reveals itself more in multiple viewings. Even the location is a part of the: who are these people? I've seen it probably 10-15 times and could still come up with patterns not seen before. Fincher has a great eye for details.

Fight Club is a classic. It has the same obsession with details as the movies Seven and The Game. Gone Girl and Social Network are great movies but not as obsessive with structure and patterns as the other 3. They are well designed, but have a more what you see, is what you get feeling.

Critics hated it because Ebert hated it:"Fight Club" is the most frankly and cheerfully fascist big-star movie since "Death Wish," a celebration of violence in which the heroes write themselves a license to drink, smoke, screw and beat one another up. I still have the original DVD with most of the negative reviews reprinted in the booklet.

Why do critics love to use the word fascist? Drinking, smoking, screwing and beating another up is fascist? A day in a roman citizens life?

What the movie does, and in this some critics were right. It shows how stupid people follow a person who spouts some nonsense, because they need something to follow. In this it has more of the Nazi Germany principle, than the roman invented fascist system.

It was a box office failure at the time.

...except that the Nazis are the prime example of fascism.
