Star beast thoughts

What did people think?

I generally liked the episode. Tennant and Tate where great as usual. Great pace, really good action, especially the fight between the different forces at Donna's house. Not sure what I thought about the sonic being able to just randomly create shields. Presume this is new for the sonic but it'll mean when it's not used to get out of situations it'll be like why not use it! I'd rather lose the sonic for a bit as it's become too much of a multi tool.

I liked the reveal that all of Donna's daughter Rose's toys she had made turned out to be monsters Donna encountered as it makes sense that some stuff could be passed on. I'd have preferred if that was just the solution to the danger. The whole just deciding to get rid of it kind of felt a cop out and made the former danger a joke. Like if it could be easily removed why didn't Donna just do that?

New TARDIS console room looks nice but it's missing something for me. Great to get something more open afte 13's which to me was far too cramp. Too me though the new one looks too Star Wars like, reminds me of a Deathstar. I just feel like it doesn't feel like doctor who but it may grow on me.

Looking forward to next week. So little has been seen for next week which is exciting

I liked it. Didn't care about the she-beast subplot either way.

I enjoyed it.

It was classic RTD wasn't it? Including its faults. A too easy, almost throwaway resolution has been a hallmark of his Doctor Who writing in the past. So even the bits I didn't entirely approve of felt like a sort of homecoming.

It was fast, it was fun, Tennant and Tate continue to have great chemistry, it looks... monied, but it still felt like Doctor Who. If that episode represents the extent of Disney's influence moving forward, I'm not going to have an issue with it. (Disney is my biggest fear for the future.), although the 'Whoniverse' logo at the beginning felt a bit like a harbinger of doom...

Yeah. I liked it. I'm content. It's good to have it back.

reply

Don't think Disney was involved till after the specials but will be interesting to see how much influence they have going forward

And yeah the resolution was like RTD of old but I was hoping we'd moved on from that kind of writing. I found a lot of his finales had great build ups and his first parts where great but he ended up painting himself into a corner and having to use something convoluted to resolve e.g. in last of the timelords, reversing time was like ending with and it was just a dream.

Like I said if it had just been that passing it down to her daughter had lessened it and made it safe I'd have not minded that. You could argue the doctor never considered that and didn't know it would pass down. Maybe passing it down made it easy to get rid of but the way they just decide to do it was far too easy. Like I said surely the doctor would have known

Yeah, the Disney and (Sony-owned) Bad Wolf partnership has already started. But so far it hasn't really altered anything important, but just provided it with a bigger budget and a production sheen. Fingers crossed that continues.

Looking forward to next week's. But more looking forward to Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor. After we've got the 60th out of the way, we'll really start to see where the show is headed now.

reply

I could be wrong but I believe I read the deal didn't get finalised till after the 60th was filmed so they did not fund it.

That's quite exciting if true as it looked great as it was so I imagine the next season will look even better

reply

Well, their logo is on it and the show has moved to Disney+ outside of the UK. So the distribution rights deal has started... but if you're right and it was all done too late to have actual Disney funding in these specials, then the specials make a very good case for not actually needing Disney's funding anyway. Star Beast looked great.

So, yes, if that is indeed true, it'll be interesting to see how that Mouse House money plays into the next season proper.

It was appalling.

Donna had a son called Jason who she renamed Rose?

Could the trans agenda be pushed any harder?

Why is Wilf still alive?

What's the point of that?

Worst Doctor Who episode ever.

reply

He renamed himself when he transitioned. He chose the name Rose for the same reason as making the toys.

reply

They had a trans character. Big deal. Your straight agenda is very visible.

And why is Wilf being alive an issue? I wonder if we'll see him in the last special as the late Bernard Cribbins was seen on set

reply

I saw an article stating that he was able to film most of his scenes, but not all. I hope they were able to film his send off and he will be shown in the next special when Donna returns. His missing in this episode and the clear "no, he is not dead!" seems to imply that, just that they were not able to film his scenes for this special.

💯

I generally liked it too, a big improvement on the last series. I think if we hadn't had so much wokery rammed down our throats in the last series then Rose being transgender wouldn't really have raised any eyebrows, although I could have done without the pronouns dialogue! I agree with you about Donna's danger being lessened by sharing it with her daughter, that should have been the solution.

Apart from that it had a good story and good aliens, but I don't like the new tardis. But at least the Doctor is now the Doctor again!

reply

Mixed bag for me. Love Tennant and Tate together but this was eh. Not Davies best writing. Star beast reveal as a villain didn't feel like a surprise. Liked all the new characters but was annoyed by some of the unnecessary extras. Such as Shirley the Unit boss character didn't need darts and missiles in her wheelchair, Rose calling out the Doctor for his (or is it they?) use of pronouns seemed unnecessary and Donna's dig at men in general that the Doctor as a man would not understand. Also the background music seemed out of place at times. New Tardis interior seems too big and too bright, much better than 13's dungeon but still too bright. Liked the new intro with the old style Doctor Who logo but the music is a bit too much. So overall not terrible and certainly worth watching but a disappointment in comparison to past Tennant and Tate shows.

I was checking the Imdb ratings for this (unnumbered) season: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0436992/episodes/?year=2023
I though this episode was pretty good, but it's rated lowest at 7.1. Troll vote rigging, about 15% are 1* (except Germany)

reply

Thought it was horrible.

The plot is lifted from something I can't remember, either a Twilight Zone or Outer Limits.

It managed to check almost every box - although I missed the gay and vegan characters.

If I had to describe it in two words, it'd be Doctor Poo.
