List of Canceled Shows that never got a real ending

Now that Earl has pretty much been canceled, with a cliffhanger ending no less, it got me thinking about other shows that have been canceled with little to no ending.

1) Gary & Mike

The final episode of Gary & Mike ends with the titular duo driving off an unfinished overpass with a ton of cops chasing them. They hold hands Thelma & Louise style and the screen freeze frames with them in midair and the words "To Be Continued" appear on the screen.

2) Invader Zim

This was one of the funniest cartoons ever.

3) Undergrads

This show had an okay final episode, but they totally set up the story to continue "next semester".

4) Brisco County Jr.

This show had so much going for it.

5) Jack of All Trades

Okay, admittedly not the best show, but as far as Bruce Campbell one-liners went, this show was great.

Those are just a few that I have thought of. Please feel free to add to the list or discuss the shows already listed.

I have seen MOST of the ones that have always bothered me on here.. although I will argue.. that Angel felt DONE.. it was a bit of a downer ending, but in the scheme of things.. I mean Angel was kind of a downbeat Hero and the whole theme of the show was Angel fighting against these forces that are so much bigger than himself.. granted it was an exciting ending.. but the ending wasn't about the fight.. it was about the fight.. so it felt.. RIGHT..

kind of like Cheers.. at the end of the day.. Sam could have left it off with Diane but he didn't.. in the end he went on running the bar.

but.. the ones I do agree with (and a couple I can't remember quite how they ended it off).

Strange Luck - early mid 90s FOX show with DB Sweeney.

but..

Drive
Lone Gunmen
Action! (NO ONE has mentioned this? the original FOX run I believe ended with one of the BIGGEST cliffhangers with super producer Peter Dragon dead.. or dying?) although the DVD does have the followup episodes.. although it was reported Illeana Douglas would NOT have been in season 2, which would have been a blow to the show.. although Jay Mohr was AWESOME.

Firefly.. not so sure how the show ended.. but the movie really didn't live up to it, same with Dead Like Me.

X-Files and MillenniuM (the LAME LAME MillenniuM wrap on X-Files was AWFUL) and the entire mythology of X-Files never really went right after season 5..

as someone else mentioned.. "Reaper" and "Reunion" (it was like losing 24 if it had been CANNED at the 1/3 mark.. granted.. it may not have worked as a SERIES.. but as a limited run ONE year series, I would LOVE to have seen how it turned out.. as I recall the very last episode ended with the character you THOUGHT was stuck in a wheelchair, actually wasn't.

True, Angel did get a "real" ending, but the entire last half of the final season seemed hurriedly summed up. It kind of makes you wonder if the show would have ended differently if it would have continued for another season. Buffy would have likely had a forced ending as well if it hadn't been picked up by another network (don't remember the network name then, but it is now CW). In my opinion, Buffy was past its time to end as the show had just become annoying, but that tends to happen with many shows. Angel was still entertaining, and it was a shame it had to end so abruptly. It was a great ending though, even if it was seriously depressing. The only show I feel had a better ending was Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.

The worst part of this whole cancellation is I had only started watching Earl around mid-season 4 because my brother insisted on watching it when it was in syndication on Monday nights. Now I watch the reruns every weeknight. There isn't much worth watching now days - most of the new shows are just the same crap. Thank CW for Supernatural and Discovery for Mythbusters or I would go insane without decent new programming worth watching!

I AM the Darkside.

Joey
Poltergeist: The Legacy
Invasion
Scrubs
The X Files (even though it had a excellent finale they did actually cancel it because of low ratings and didn't commision a 10th season sadly, but the finale was an excellent one though)

I just finished all of the my name is earl's i cant believe the way the show ended. they couldn't have cancelled it at a worst time is there no justice?

reply

The worst (first) ending of a show is of course "Farscape".

The main charachters get blown into atoms and the words "To be continued appears". At least they tried to fix that with the mini-series - but still.
