Michael Oher says he was never adopted, tricked into conservatorship

Retired NFL player Michael Oher was not adopted by a rich white family as depicted in the 2009 movie "The Blind Side," according to a Tennessee court filing obtained by ESPN Monday. Instead, they allegedly manipulated him to become more wealthy at his expense.

The petition was reportedly filed in Shelby County, Tennessee, probate court. In it, Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy are accused of taking Oher into their home as a high school student under a conservatorship they tricked him into, which granted them legal authority to make business deals on his behalf.

Oher, 37, is reportedly asking the court to end the Tuohy family's conservatorship, stop them from using his name and likeness and provide a full account of their earnings from using his name. In addition to unspecified compensatory and punitive damages, he is also reportedly seeking a "fair" share of profits.

"The Blind Side" saw wild success from Oher's poverty-to-Super-Bowl-champ story — but the report says he didn't see any funds from the movie.

The Tuohys are also accused of using that power to negotiate a deal that made them, including their two birth children, millions of dollars in royalties from the Oscar-winning film. They began negotiating a movie deal about their relationship with Oher shortly after the 2006 release of the book "Blind Side: Evolution of the Game," according to the filing.

Members of the family were each allegedly paid $225,000, plus 2.5% of the film's "defined net proceeds." The film earned more than $300 million.

An additional 2007 contract allegedly gave 20th Century Fox Studios the rights to Oher's story without any payment, according to the filing. He alleges that he doesn't recall signing any such contract or was misled to think he was agreeing to something else.

Oher was entering his senior year of high school when he signed the papers hoping to join the family he thought cared for him, an experience he detailed in his 2011 best-selling memoir "I Beat the Odds."

[quote]"They explained to me that it means pretty much the exact same thing as 'adoptive parents', but that the laws were just written in a way that took my age into account," he wrote.

He reportedly continued his life under that impression until he retired from the NFL in 2016.

The offensive tackle was drafted with the Baltimore Ravens' No. 23 overall pick of the 2009 draft after a standout career at Ole Miss. He didn't discover the alleged lie until February of 2023, to "his chagrin and embarrassment," according to the filing.

[quote] "Mike didn't grow up with a stable family life," his attorney, J. Gerard Stranch IV said in the filing. "When the Tuohy family told Mike they loved him and wanted to adopt him, it filled a void that had been with him his entire life. Discovering that he wasn't actually adopted devastated Mike and wounded him deeply."

Beyond the alleged movie deal manipulation, the family has also used the story to promote their foundation. Meanwhile, Leigh Anne Tuohy continues to refer to Oher as her adopted son in her work as an author and motivational speaker.

While Oher's learning about the alleged funds withheld and fake adoption were major blows, the filing claims that his issues with the Tuohy family began due to how he was portrayed as "unintelligent" in "The Blind Slide."

In his 2011 book, he said he played football well before the Tuohys entered his life and was knowledgeable about the sport. The film relies heavily on the idea that Leigh Anne Tuohy, played by Sandra Bullock, essentially taught him the sport through metaphors about protecting the family.

Oher also wrote that he is more outgoing and cheerful than the character presented by actor Quinton Aaron, who rarely smiled in the movie.

Even in 2015 while playing for the Carolina Panthers, Oher was clear that he didn't like the way the movie followed him throughout his career.

Welp, that white savior fantasy turned out to be a dud.

Thanks, Obama.

So it’s racist for a white person to help a black person?

reply

No, but I guess it’s racist to brag, act smug, and self-congratulatory about it.

reply

It's hilarious when random rich celebrities turn on each other.

The most shocking sentence:

"The Tuohys are also accused of using that power to negotiate a deal that made them, including their two birth children, millions of dollars in royalties from the Oscar-winning film."

What? How is that possible? They aren't actors, director, producers of the movie, it's impossible they can earn "millionS of dollars" from the movie!

I smell bullshit.

reply

Yeah. There cant be millions from royalties. Blind side had a budget of 29 millions Then made 255 millions domestic.

Then there is Sandra Bullock, all actors, producers, writers who all get royalties. Then that family. They all do not get millions.

His lawyers really cant know how much money family get until trial and they would be ordered to show their finances. I would actually like to know the exact money. Hope there will be trial, lol. Maybe they will even call Sanrda Bullock for witness. That would be hilarious.

Just something the crooked lawyer said.

i met him when i was working at the airport. he pointed out that he was the real guy from the book/movie. i guess he found out about all this stufff in more recent times.

Rich people’s problems. Dont forget that all of them are millionaires.

Take that white saviors. Never help random black people. Because it will backfire. LOL

He seems so ungrateful. I kinda feel sorry for them. Because you can see how they were really rooting for him and his team long after movie came out. They really liked him and were proud of him. And then he does this.

I feel like he is broke and his sports money ran out so that why all of that. He was probably living very rich life and no new income to sustain it. Problems for a lot of retired sports people. They retire at age of 30, not working anymore. But keep living and spending like they were when they received millions per year. And then bam - bank account is empty.

Thats when someone told him to milk those Movie Money he didnt get. Which is... No one owns him money for "his story". No one pays Elvis, hitler, Dian estate money when Hollywood makes movies about "their story". No one pays Prince William or King Charles every time someone makes tv show about them. Thats not how it works.

And he can’t demand any money from anyone because movie portrayed him differently. They do taht all the time for dramatic reasons because real life is too boring to make a movie.

I would like to hear their version. But that is so freaking ungrateful. That family took him in and gave him everything. They basically wrote a book about him and then made it to a movie, making him world famous. And now he does this....

P.S. It was always weird to me even back then how they all glamorized this story how that family took him from the street to their home like he was some stray puppy. That really was a white savior complex. Dond think they would do that so some white giant overweight 17 years old dude. They just saw him as this poor black oppressed kid and wanted to "save him". Then were so proud of themselves.

reply

No good deed goes unpunished.

If the family is already independently wealthy, they should just pay him whatever amount they made off of "his" story and wash their hands of him.

reply

you're probably right. It does seem a little late to be trying to cash in now. Maybe indeed he pissed all his money away and now is looking for redemption. Wouldn't be the first money-grab on behalf of washed-up sports stars.

how can you know the color mattered to them ?
even if you think they were just in it for themselves , which is a hell of a stretch , helping a homless person of any color would have the same "benefit"

I don't know about this. This is the problem one has. Why did he wait until now to say something? "The Blind Side" was released 14 years ago. Why didn't Oher make a stink then? Or, you could say he didn't do a thing at that time because he was focused on football. Fine. Well, his football career ended in 2017. Why wait another six years to suddenly come up with this story??

It doesn't make sense to me.

reply

He is broke. That is why he went to them wanting 15 million or he said he would say this story.

reply

He is probably broke and he saw all those articles about huge residuals / royalties that people get from movies and decided he can milk that family, thinking they had some sort of deal and make millions while he gets nothing.

He doesnt understand that big residuals get only A-list actors who negotiate that. Or main stars of tv show. And only if it became super famous and rewatchable. Even writers dont get much.

He and that family are not main actors. It seems like none of them even wrote the book. Its some random dude who is credited. And Blind Side had a small budget of 29 millions when it was made. So its not like he was payed 10 millions for the rights of book. No one knew it would become Sandra Bullocks Oscar and they would promote it like crazy during awards season. Many-many book rights are being sold every year to Hollywood and only few get super successful movies. Some authors get small budget indie movie that comes and go unnoticed.

The point is - author could just sell the book for small amount of money and no residuals and got money in one payment. Which he gave half to that family and this player. So whatever residuals anyone get its Sandra, lead actor, director, writer. And its probably not much at all since I dont think this movie is constantly on tv in repeats like Harry Potter, Twilight etc.

Sandra Bullock said that "It was too good to be true." Apparently, that turns out to be the case.

Also, the article says that Oher was "adopted," but as we now see, he never was adopted.

reply

Tuohy attorneys: Michael Oher received $100K in 'The Blind Side' profits, same as everyone in family.
