I'm Re-watching From The Start

I will post any thoughts or queries I have as it goes along.

You're welcome.

I enjoyed TWD, and have tried r-watching it from the start a couple of times. I lose track and don't have the patience, but those first few seasons were pretty good. I was still shocked when Rick sees that little girl and tried to help her, then she turns around and is a monster rushing him. Or the half-bodied zombie dragging itself that Rick eventually puts out of its misery.

It's interesting how Morgan is the first person he meets, and he keeps going in and out of the series and then shows up in Fear The Walking Dead.

First three episodes were great. Last time I watched it, i got a little bored by the Governor and Negan.

We'll see.

reply

Zinger (1600) Totally agree with you, especially Negan. I found it so hard to watch after season 6 final because of Jefferey Dean Morgan and gave up halfway through season 7.

reply

I made it through Season 7 Episode 3.

I could tell from there that it would be too much nonsense for me to endure. The idea that Negan was so evil, so vile, so oppressive, and they had opportunity after opportunity to just shoot him right there on the spot... yet didn't.

I knew where that was headed and I couldn't take anymore.

It’s a lot smoother, satisfying experience streaming it than having watched it in real time (when you had to wait a week, or months, for the next episode…AND sit thru commercials).

That 2nd season felt super slow in syndication, but runs a ton more smoothly when you can stream it.

IMO, the first 4 seasons are a lot of fun. It’s still going to be intriguing for a few more seasons….and then you’re going to reach a point where you’re criticizing like crazy, but you’re in too deep to not want to see how it ends.

I think Negan is a great character, but it’s the very thin thread that keeps me casually watching (when I used to watch religiously). In my head, I’m thinking “how did the show runners ever make Daryl and Carol boring to me?”

Yeah, in real time it wasn't that fun but was more fun when you could binge-watch. I'm actually looking forward to re-watching season two.

reply

I also have to agree that Walking Dead benefits greatly from binge-watching.

As for Carol, I never cared for her character and it was beyond stupid how they turned her into Rambo in later seasons. Honestly, in a show where zombies are a thing, Carol as a gun-totin' bad-ass was something I never bought. We could've gotten sniper Andrea like in the comics, but no, they ruined her character in favor of Carol, of all people.

I binged the first 4 seasons in advance of S05 (when I started watching week to week), & even then I found the first half of S02 & the last half of S04 a bit slow going at times. Overall, I'd have to put Season's 1 & 3 in a tie as my favorite complete seasons, then 2 & 4 tied at second; 5-8 there are some good ones here & there but rapidly diminishing returns & when we get to 9 thru now, I'm barely hanging on.

reply

I did much the same thing. Recorded the marathon before season 4. Watched 1-3 while the first half of season 4 aired, then binged 4A and started watching 4B in real time.

I remember being so obsessed with reading old forum posts as I made progress and regretting not getting a chance to participate in the original discussions.

Then when I caught up, jumping on IMDb and ranting about the idiocy of the week became a favorite pastime of mine.

In retrospect, I can see how a lot of fans were irritated by the farm on Season 2. Waiting a week (or weeks) between episodes would have been painful as slow as it progressed.

reply

God, I forgot how excruciatingly annoying Andrea was.

reply

I always hated her. Same with Shane except when he pummeled Ed.

reply

I WILL STAND BY SEASONS 1 THROUGH 3 FOREVER...ONCE IT BECOMES MAN VS MAN CONSISTANTLY...I LOSE INTEREST.

reply

thats the best bit , like mad max
the whole thing would be better without the zombies

reply

LMAO....NO..IT WORKS FOR THE BOOKS...THE SHOW TURNED TO REPETITIVE CRAP AFTER SEASON 4 OR 5.

reply

I miss Dale. It was a mistake losing him.

reply

I also miss T Dog.

reply

AMC showed the first few episodes last weekend so I enjoyed seeing T-oops! I dropped the key in the drain-Dog and Dale who was a favorite of mine. They killed off too many interesting characters.

reply

Nothing beats Frank Darabont's season 1. Once they pushed him out, the show was shit for me. So glad he won his case against AMC and that the fuckers have to pay him $200,000,000.

reply

Indeed. It's criminal what they did. Darabont did an incredible job with the atmosphere and immersion, also working closely with Bear to roll in that fantastic soundtrack early on. Show quality with Seasons 2 & 3 maintain a lot of that fortunately, but midway through Season 4 is where I started to notice something was off.

reply

In hindsight, Glen and Maggie's relationship was so forced.

Wanna have sex?
Okay.
I'm in love with you now.
Me too.

reply

In a way (with hindsight) you're probably right.

BUT, nothing in this show was more forced than Rick & (ugh!).....Michonne. For seemingly no other reason than the TV writers giving her comic Andrea's storyline.

reply

I disagree. Apocalypse. Only nice guy still alive. I don't blame her for jumping at the chance before her sister could get her hooks in him.

reply

No seriously, Andrea is so dumb.

It's like the writers wanted to create the dumbest, most annoying woman ever.

reply

As I have said before, the whole problem with the TV version of Andrea was the writing. They really fucked up her character arc from the comics version. Then they killed her off & gave her comic storyline to (ugh!) Michonne. Bad, BAD idea there.

reply

Andrea running from the Governor out in the wilderness was horrible writing. All she had to do was head into the woods, wait for Governors vehicle to pass and away she goes. Instead she stays in the wide open field and he spots her over and over again, horrible.
