The Sex Scenes were totally unnecessary, and do not suit the movie.

This would be a great movie to show kids in History class, if it wasn't for the sex scenes.

reply

They were necessary to tell the story of Oppenheimer's life, and provide context for what was said in the hearings, as well as to explain his relationship with his wife. A teacher could easily enough edit them out, and explain to his students that Oppenheimer had an affair with a woman who killed herself when he left her, so they understand later events in the film.

reply

Nolan could have used the typical American after-sex scene, both lying in bed, she covered up to her shoulders. That wouldn't change anything.
But FP seems to enjoy exposing herself...

reply

I suspect neither Nolan nor Pugh wanted that scene, it was the studio executives wanted juicing it up for box office purpose.

reply

By making it Rated R? Wtf are you talking about?

reply

I didn't even realize that was Florence Pugh. She looked quite different than she has in other films in which I've seen her. I also don't recall her doing previous nude scenes. In any event, the scene seemed to have been shot the way it was for very specific reasons. We see them sitting comfortably, yet nude, speaking, totally at ease with one another. Not only does it give us insight into both the dynamic of their relationship and their own personalities, but it serves as an effective callback later, when Oppenheimer is sitting nude before the hearing committee, where his nakedness is portrayed to very different effect.

Having them in bed under the covers would have been pretty ridiculous, and altered the film significantly for the worse.

Right, we shouldn't dare to show kids something as wicked and obscene as the human body. That's definitely the most disturbing and objectionable thing about a movie focused on a weapon capable of destroying the planet. Good thing your mind's in the proper place.

reply

Hah.

American movies have always been pretty puritanical about sexual matters -- at one time censored by the church(right wing), now censored by feminist and other political entities(the left wing.) Or both at the same time.

I've always felt the reason why American movies have censored sex scenes is because -- unlike say murder scenes in which somebody chops somebody's head off -- "impressionable youth" will be stimulated perhaps to HAVE sex(it looks fun when filmed right, yes?) So...dangers. Pregnancy. STDs. Family issues, etc.

And maybe that's what the R rating is for.

Meanwhile: adults can and should be given erotic material for the screen, and clearly there is an audience for it, but before that can happen, you need actresses(moreso than actors) WILLING to go nude for the cameras and, in some instances, to simulate sex. There are arguments raging even as we speak in Hollywood(well before the strikes hit) as to how intimate scenes CAN be and we have these "intimacy coordinators" superising that.

Clearly Florence Pugh was willing to be tastefully nude and suggestively graphic in some brief sex scenes here -- it really is up to the woman, even as Cillian Murphy did some nudity too.

And for what reason?

A pretty good reason, I'd say. To establish Oppenheimer as the womanizer that seems to be part of his personality and to also indicate that his womanizing was largely among women who had been -- or still were -- Communist synpathizers. Oppie tied his sexual conquests to the dangerous politics with which he flirted(but never committed) through his lifetime.

In the 60's and 70s, we used to have lots of movies with nudity, sex, and overall eroticism. Mainly in "foreign films," but also in American films. It will be harder to get such movies filmed today -- again, the actresses must say "yes."

Oppenheimer was a good yes.

Meanwhile, in the same summer of 2023, Jennifer Lawrence made a big deal of a comedy fight scene in the nude for HER movie "No Hard Feelings." She promoted the movie by promoting the scene(which isn't terribly erotic) and said it was easy to perform.

So that's two.

Maybe the American movies will grow back up as women take up their sexuality on screen a bit more(men can join right in.)

If not, there's always porn and Only Fans to "get right to it."

"American movies have always been pretty puritanical about sexual matters -- at one time censored by the church(right wing), now censored by feminist and other political entities(the left wing.)"

Please cite some examples of "left-wing" censorship. They may try to have an influence by speaking out, but that is nothing compared to the cutting up of film carried on by the Hayes Commission. There's simply no comparison. The HC had the authority to cut any scene they didn't like, and if it had any sexual undertone at all you can be sure they wouldn't like it. The "left wing," as you put it, has no such power, nor any desire for such power. Please name a recent film that could not be made because of the "left wing."

Not sure about that answer, but in the news recently was news that 20th Century Fox has re-edited some racial insult language from the 1971 Best Picture winner The French Connection and sent it back into the marketplace. Will a "pure copy" ever be made available again?

Another example: the TV series Bates Motel, based on Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 thriller about a man (Norman Bates) who dresses up in women's clothing(specifically as his Mother) to kill a woman in a shower --would have that shower scene re-staged WITHOUT Bates wearing women's clothing so as not to offend the trans community. This was a statement made by the showrunners.

Some of the censorship is simply found in the ABSENCE of the types of sexual movies greenlit and made in the 70s: Carnal Knowledge, Klute, Don't Look Now, Women in Love, A Clockwork Orange, Looking for Mr. Goodbar, Last Tango in Paris..simply a different era and the right wing doesn't run Hollywood now.

reply

Revisions by the producers of the content is way different from cuts and edits imposed by some outside committee run by Bible-thumpers. (And I think it's a good idea to remove that "racial insult language" from TFC, if it's what I think it is.)

reply

When did hedonistic Leftist-cult members become Bible thumpers?

Here are a few more examples:

Crazy leftists get Scarlett Johansson to drop out of a film:

Crazy Leftists got Unplanned banned from theatres:

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/film/reviews/article-anti-abortion-film-unplanned-is-a-disgusting-piece-of-propaganda-that/

Crazy Leftists and their over-exaggerated "MeToo" nonsense led to the creation of intimacy coordinators, which basically puts sex/nudity scenes in the hands of how a Leftist wants it depicted:
https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/how-intimacy-coordinators-ensure-safety-on-theater-and-film-sets

Hilariously enough, even completely benign things like the Toy Story 2 scene was removed in the wake of the crazy Leftists harping on about MeToo:
https://www.theguardian.com/film/2019/jul/03/toy-story-2-casting-couch-blooper-deleted-by-disney-after-metoo-movement

This also led to a Space Jam 2 scene being removed, which was also completely benign:
https://www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture/movies/pep-le-pew-scene-removed-space-jam-sequel-actor-says-n1260282

And further to the point, Leftist rags admit there was a "reckoning" in the wake of the Left-wing spurred MeToo movement, prompting for a lot of changes in how women were depicted in film (and none of it was for the better):

None of that came from Right-wingers.

reply

They edited Donald Trump out of Home Alone 2...all 5 seconds of it. lmao.

reply

Nice try. Bond, James Bond, is a womanizer too. And where is the graphic nudity in Bond movies? Not even Olga Kurylenko had to strip down for being a Bond girl. And she is really hot and has done nude scenes before.

In between I really prefer to watch real porn instead of movies with not that attractive actresses (FP, JL) who only think they have a desirable body.

reply

In what alternate reality are Florence Pugh and Jennifer Lawrence “not that attractive”?

reply

In a reality (btw: there is only one) where Margot Robbie, Anne Hathaway, Blake Lively - just to name a few - are MORE attractive. But hey, some will even jerk off at pics of Lizzo...

reply

Even in the 90s...

reply

Completely agree about the nude and sex scenes.

reply

I agree with OP and Pete314, they could have done it more decently.

I can't see this movie being of interest for kids too young to see a tit. So what's the problem?

It's such a small part of the movie (literally seconds), but it's strange how some prudes are so fixated on it.

reply

It's okay. Kids these days won't sit still for a three hour movie anyway, not most of them.
