The last Top gun was 36 years ago. Unless they are setting this five years in the past, he would be significantly too old to realistically be a new fighter pilot.
Then again, Tom Cruise's old ass definitely wouldn't be flying jets either.

A person needs to be no more than 32 years old to enter initial flight training.

They cleverly avoided a plot hole here in this, the only perfect and plot hole free movie in history.

shareThe original film is from 1986. Goose's son was supposed to be four so he would have been born in 1982. Maverick was filmed in 2019 which would have made Rooster 37. He was already an experienced pilot who had been in the navy for some time.

But he's not a new fighter pilot. He's new to Top Gun, sure, but Top Gun is elite training for fighter pilots who are already experienced.

I don't think it was Rooster's first time at Top Gun. In fact, I suspect they were all graduates.
This was a caper film; they were training at Top Gun for a specific mission, not just to be the best of the best in general
