Will the rest be cancelled? What will happen?

Costner announced Horizon would be composed of 4 movies.

The first movie is a bomb. It will be lucky to reach 30 million by the end of its domestic run (on a reported production budget of 100 million). Correct?

Horizon 2 is already in the can, will be released in 6 weeks (mid August?)

I've read Horizon 3 was filming earlier this year.

Even with this abysmal performance of the first movie will the second one still hit theaters?

Or can theaters withdraw?

Will the third movie even finish shooting or will they abort the other two films and leave what they have incomplete?

I've never seen anything like this in over 25 years following Hollywood productions.

I guess 2 will still be released in theatres

Its possible Costner might rethink doing 3&4 as one movie (like Cameron said he might do with Avatar sequels 4/5 if 2 hadn't been a hit) which might be only in theatres a week or so then stream ?

reply

Bozo is 100% correct here! Part 2 will have a limited release and go straight to streaming.

This is like if Rebel Moon would be released in theaters. It would flop majorly. But it wasn't and Snyder could run around and pretend that 10 billions of people watched it.

Costner should have done the same - go to some rich streaming who used to throw 200 millions on movies no one will see. And ask them to finance it. And then release it and try to pretend it's huge success.

How on earth he thought there will be audience for that?

reply

The odds are, he can make back the money via the streaming services alone.

The budget for the first 2 films is 100 mill. Many websites say it's 100 mill only for the first film - that's wrong.

It doesn't look like it's going to be a blockbuster though. I still say, he should have made it a stand-alone film, rather than a 4 parter. His initial idea in the late 80's was only for a single film. If he wanted to expand on it, he should have gone for a limited series instead.

As things stand - the first film should really want you to want to see the 2nd film - and it looks like this film will do the very opposite. (I haven't seen it - just going by the scores alone).

Metacritic finally has audience score up - it's only 6.5. It doesn't look like this will be one of those films which critics panned but audience loved. That's not a great sign moving forward.

I don't think Costner would have done this unless he knew he'd make his money back. This is the man who made the once infamous money loser Waterworld and eventually even that movie started making bank years after. I think he'll get all four movies made. 3&4 should do much better if it follows the pattern that Dune 1&2 did. Once people get watching this at home they'll be more eager to finish the saga on the big screen.

Money is already spent so of course it'll be in theaters for the second next month.

Hoping this can sprout legs in the weeks to come. It's a monumental effort and while not great yet, its a breathtaking film to see on the big screen and I think the stories are really going to intersect and get more compelling from here. The first movie in a four part thing was always going to require some patience. I just hope enough people give that to Costner cause he deserves it for this

If anyone's interested, I reviewed the movie on my youtube channel. Appreciate any feedback. Trying to improve -

I agree with this. I got back from seeing it today, and really enjoyed it. I'm very much looking forward to the next installment.
