What can break the video game movie curse?

Uncharted and a Tomb Raider reboot are currently being made. Any chance one of them will be good?

Runescape. Live action movie. Think it would work.

What bout warcraft?

Curse? I thought 'Silent Hill' was really good.

I thought Warcraft was a good story telling of the early years of the game. It hasn't gotten up to even the first World of Warcraft events. I knew some of the lore, but not all.

I am ashamed to say I really liked Pixels. While not based on a particular video game, it was a fun and entertaining movie about video games. Likewise Wreck it Ralph was good.

The Metal Gear games could make for good movies but it has to have the right director and writer. The movie cannot be allowed to be influenced too much by producers and the the cast for Solid Snake has to be really good.

It would be interesting for sure but it may be too damned weird for a lot of people to understand. It would have critics scratching their heads.

If you're referring to making a movie out of the later games like Metal Gear 3 or 4 then yeah, it would be far too confusing.

The ideal Metal Gear game to adapt, is Metal Gear Solid. If you play the game, it almost feels like watching a movie. The story is very straight forward yet the twists still make it complex enough to have depth. Of course, a movie would have to really trim down the Patriots backstory because it took 4 to 5 games to tell that whole story. It would be impossible to fit the Patriots into 1 or 2 movies. It would be completely understandable if the Patriots were written off or changed completely so that it can be told realistically in a 2 hr movie.

Pokemon GO is going to show how it should be done.

You have to cross a divide between one medium and another, and, while it is difficult with books, it is nearly impossible with movies.

What do you want in a movie based on a video game? A video game in which cutscenes are made exactly like movies? Do you want a string of them, tied together, telling the exact same story as the game you've played? Do you want something original, where characters that are in the games are portrayed differently than what you have in the game, so much so that you have trouble identifying with them because of how different they are?

What do you want? Everyone has a different answer, and almost none of them make sense. Alfred Hitchcock said, "the best literature does not make the best movies". The same is true for interactive mediums such as video games, and I think the bar is set even higher, when you move from complete interaction to passive interaction.

All that being said, in my humble opinion, it is not the movies that are failing. It is we, who's expectations are impossible to satisfy.

My favorite video game movies are HITMAN (2007), SILENT HILL REVELATIONS (2012), and TOMB RAIDER THE CRADLE OF LIFE (2003). Each one abandoned the play of the games, tried to extrapolate on the characters driving the games, and were very creative with what they came up with, in ways that I think made an excellent transition.

Funny how the general audience completely disagrees with me on each and every one.

You didn't come here to make the choice, you're here to understand why you made it.

I'd say an adaptation which gets everything people love their game counterpart right - the visual, the atmosphere, the plot points if there are any - while adding the things games tend to lack - like characterization for the main character or other characters that doesnt have any, but are present in the game. so the best of 2 worlds.

now I dont know how AC is, but for Warcraft it was the latter they screwed up. imo they tend to shy away from trying to put real depth into video game adaptations, and often they fail to deliver even the fanservice.. in the end the result is some sloppy shallow crap which feels like they are trying to sell itself just with the title.

also figure writers dont like working with a story which already has half of it from video games - nobody likes to fill in the space in others works. like someone who likes to draw I wouldnt like to work on someone elses sketches, figure someone writing music wouldnt like to write parts of a song...etc.
so the writers hired for video game adaptations dont put in a lot of effort, as its not entirely their child and go for some alibi story.

MGS directed by Nolan

He's a mix of great movies (The Following, Memento) and just utter garbage movies (Interstellar, The Dark Knight Returns).

Not too sure about Nolan.

no movie can break that curse tbh. people need to realize that most people who are fans of a certain video game won't be enough people to sustain a movie franchise.

There's a Minecraft movie being made by It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia creator/actor Rob McElhenney.

If this can capture some similar charm to movies like The Lego Movie or Trolls, then I think it can be good.
