Updated for "modern audiences"!

Finally I can watch this series

reply

LOL. Enjoy!

reply

lol thanks!

reply

God, I loathe that expression! Pretty much guaranteed to make me lose interest in just about any project!

reply

"Updated for modern audiences" aka Wokified.

reply

Makes sense. They want people to keep watching, especially that younger generation with more progressive views.

reply

It's not working, DW is getting it's lowest viewing numbers ever.

reply

Viewing numbers are down for everything. It must be due to streaming taking TV viewers away.

reply

As the article makes explicit, for the first time the BBC uploaded Doctor Who to iPlayer nearly a full day before it was broadcast on television, making the overnights even less meaningful than they already were.

reply

The article also blames good weather, do you believe everything you read?

reply

No. But I do understand that overnights are not anywhere near as important as they used to be because of the various ways that people can watch television.

We won't know if Doctor Who is doing well until the iPlayer and other time-shifted data is available. That's not a question of 'belief'. That's just a fact of how modern television works.

reply

I doubt Guitar King would be arguing with you if you made exactly that point but about a show he didn't have a problem with. Political tunnel vision.

reply

I've encountered him before. I don't think he even watches the show. I -- and others -- have tried to explain to him that overnights are not that important in 2024, that ratings are not as important to a BBC show as they would be to one on commercial television, and that the show -- being British -- has different cultural values to the ones he favours as a conservative American. It all just bounces off him.

He's just one of those tiresome people who takes any and every opportunity to show off his 'anti-woke' credentials online. Context doesn't concern him. Knowing things doesn't concern him.

reply

So, it can't be because Ncuti insulted customers and the show is featuring drag queens now?

reply

A detail - but there's little stigma against drag-related performances in the UK. I imagine it's a bit cringe in Doctor Who, but I find the entire show cringe (not for me).

reply

Is the character in drag or non binary?

I heard a clip from the episode in which they correct someone who has misgendered them.

reply

No idea. Just noting that there's no outrage over it to Brits here.

reply

Dr Who is a woke joke in the UK now, nobody’s watching it anymore.

reply

The reality is millions watched it on streaming. Even my boomer parents don't watch television as much as they stream shows. Of course it makes no sense to judge a show's success based solely on it's TV ratings when those are around across the board.

Pretty straightforward logic. When fans of the show have a second option for viewing the show, and the other option is actually the more popular way to watch, it's going to have an effect on the ratings.

Capisce?

reply

"Updated for modern audiences" automatically means it will be crap.

reply

If only they kept it for traditional audiences that worked so well for decades. Then it wouldn't have plummeting viewing figures.

reply

Studios fail to recognize the power of nostalgia and instead continue to cater to modern audiences most of whom don't know or give a shit about the originals. That's why TV show remakes continue to suck.

Cobra Kai isn't popular because it's the best written or acted show on TV. It's popular because it tapped into that nostalgia and connected with the original fan base.

reply

That is always the mark for Box Office Poison when it comes to movies or at this point all entertainment.
