Technically They Weren't Satanists. SPOILERS!

Satanists basically swear fealty to Satan, not so with these folks in "Hereditary" They were after some obscure "Prince of Hell" Why? Who knows. If you see no problem with that, then you don't understand who Satan really is.

He has no friends, no allies, no confederates as it were. He's the king of pride & ego, the father of lies. He's not going to take kindly to us crazy mortals swearing love & devotion to one of his underlings. All of hell is under his domain, & everyone, Paimon & whoever else answers to him. The cult f*%d up by throwing no love his way, you just don't do that to the chief, the big cheese. His house, his rules.

So jealous, hateful S.O.B that he is, he's not given his "blessing" to some crazy cult after one of his minions. That's something this movie gets wrong. I'm surprised he didn't take hellish vengeance on all involved..

The cult can't be considered "Satanists" as Satan wasn't who they worshipped.

You should probably take the word Satanists out of your topic title if you want to avoid spoiling it

Your title is a spoiler on its own.

Thanks for sharing to both of you. Is this all you have to say or do you have something more meaningful to add to the topic?

LaVeyan rebooted Satanism, he doesn't even believe in the supernatural. Popular with Libertarians and Atheists.

There's a Progressive spin-off whose name I forget. Popular with Marxists and neon-pagans [suggested by Firefox].

"He was influenced by the ideas and writings of Friedrich Nietzsche and Ayn Rand. Satan is viewed as a positive archetype representing pride, carnality, and enlightenment." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LaVeyan_Satanism

Satanists Just Aren’t Scary Anymore https://www.wired.com/2018/07/geeks-guide-hereditary/

In many ways Hereditary is a throwback to older films like Don’t Look Now and Rosemary’s Baby. Horror author Grady Hendrix admires that classic style, but thinks it was risky for the film to feature an old-school Satanic cult.

“Satanists are inherently laughable these days,” he says. “For most of us our main contact with Satanists are really bad amateur metal bands, or that guy you know in grad school who’s like, ‘I’m a Satanist. It means I’m a freethinker and a vegan, and I’m in an open relationship.'”
