Yep. Saw this coming after Tenet underperformed. I'm guessing Dune will be delayed too. Muslims do this kind of stuff to non-muslims in Muslim majority countries all the time. Not saying this sort of stuff is right, but it's the truth. In the case of Communist China they're pretty much opposed to all forms of Religion. Members of any religion are treated with extreme prejudice and persecution in China. Not just Muslims. The Oscars are bullshit. It has been for years. Most filmmakers don't care about winning Oscars anyways. They'll make movies that they want to make not what some politically correct awards ceremony thinks. I remember some of the controversy when this was released. Didn't even know it was based on real historical events/people. I thought it was just a brainless action flick with a ton of slow-mo and CGI that just happened to be set in ancient Greece. I personally never really saw anything offensive about it, but this was before the PC/SJW culture wars, so any controversy it might have had probably faded off rather quickly. What are the Disney+ buy rates? Have they been released yet? That's what's really going to matter. It needs at least $400 million in buy rates to break even which would be a world record for any kind of VOD product. That's not too bad actually. Theatres are also operating at 30% capacity too, so the numbers will lower regardless. WB is probably looking to just break even with this. It was never going to make a high profit given the circumstances. If it gets legs it might do better over the next few weeks, but it's too early to tell. If it underperforms then WB will probably delay Wonder Woman 1984 and Dune into next year, but I hope that doesn't happen. It's a shame Disney bought out Fox. All of those good franchises will just sit on the shelf or just get another crappy reboot with 'woke' elements. Maybe Disney could sell some of these franchises to gain capital. They're billions of dollars in debt right now, so they should sell them to someone who will do something with it. I doubt it will be successful. The budget is 200 million plus advertising/marketing costs. The film needs to make 400-500 million just to break even. No way it makes that much in streaming sales alone. I doubt Black Widow gets sent straight to Disney+ too. Disney can't afford to have two major bombs in a row. They'll likely delay the film again before suffering another major loss. The Theory of Everything (2014) Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) Avatar (2009) Forrest Gump (1994) I am Sam (2001) They weren't taking it seriously to begin with. Some even believe it's not even a real virus. I can understand why people would feel that way though. Lot's of businesses have failed because of the lockdowns. People are also getting bored of being stuck at home for months on end. Lot's of people losing jobs ect.... Sooner or later things are going to have to get back to normal. I understand some people are high risk for this virus, but 99% of people will not be affected by this. Keep the high risk people quarantined, and let everyone else go about their business. I don't think so. There's no major competition right now, and Tenet is the only major new blockbuster at the time. Even if things are slow at the moment it has the potential to go even higher over time. Avatar opened to only $70 million back in 2009 and ended up grossing $700 million due to lack of major competition over the months. Not saying Tenet will make those numbers, but you get the idea. Also, theatres aren't open everywhere yet. Many major markets like LA and NYC are still closed at this time. Those could add to the revenue if those markets eventually reopen. It remains to be seen if Tenet will succeed, but I doubt it will be an outright flop like some think it will. I doubt COVID will be much of a factor too. If people can go to a crowded Walmart or beach on a weekend then they can go to a socially distant theatre too. Funny. It's getting good reviews on RT (83%), but the audience ratings are bad (43%). Sounds like another Last Jedi scenario for Disney. Don't think I'll get this. I already have the previous Blu Ray set, so I don't think this is really worth it. If they actually put the series out on 4K UHD with HDR then that would be worth upgrading imo. Really? I'd argue that Star Wars is the only reason Ridley has a career. How many roles did Ridley have pre Star Wars? Not very many I presume. Don't get me wrong. I absolutely despise the sequel trilogy, but I don't blame any of the actors for what went wrong. Pretty good considering the pandemic and theatres are at limited seating capacity. It'll likely dominate the China and US box office next week too. If all goes well they should at least make the budget costs back, and possibility end up around $400 million worldwide when all is said and done. Concession sales are what keeps theatres open. Movie theaters actually make very little money from actual ticket sales. It's the overpriced Popcorn and Soda that makes them billions. Seeing Tenet on Monday in IMAX. Can't wait. I think a recast will be in the works. Black Panther is too big of a franchise to be put on the shelf due to an unfortunate death. Richard Harris was recast in the Harry Potter series after his death, and it turned out just fine. I can see John David Washington making a good Black Panther assuming he can do a Wakanda accent. Dang only 43 years old too. RIP. The MCU won't be the same after this. Not true. People flocked to bars, restaurants, and beaches when they opened by the thousands. Movie theatres will be no exception. However, the box office may be lower due to reduced capacity.
