I would ask of any movie a story that can stand on its own and does not need a sequel - which in this case was not even realised. How can a wicked witch be nice and team up with her sister anyways - Wicked witches should also hate each other to fulfill their stereotypes He wakes up: "Where is my gold??" and Annie already married. You know, this is Hollywood - they end stories when they are still happy yeah - you should have seen the real Sean and not Colter after the frozen kiss (like you see in the mirror at the first scene). or maybe it is now Sean's mind in the remains of Colters body in the source code box - who later is sent on mission into the body of another... so the sequel is not just about family and friend wondering about the the pieceful Sean's sudden affiliation to guns and the military -
Sean: But I am just a piecefull history teacher. Goodwill: What you are -ah- were - does not matter, what only matters is your mission. Sean: But I am just a piecefull history teacher. Goodwill: That is not correct. Complete your mission like a good soldier. Sean: But I am just a piecefull history teacher. Goodwill: Are you out of your mind? You do not even remember the cards? My name? What about Afghanistan - what about the quarrel with your father your deeply deeply deeply regret?? You are Colter, a soldier and by the way you are actually more dead than alive, its just part of your brain we keep functioning... ...meanwhile Sean's body married Christina...
"original" Ok, it is necessary that the plot goes on otherwise the alternate reality topic would be lost - but after the frozen kiss you should actually see the real Sean and not Colter (like you see in the mirror at the first scene). Colter entered Sean's 8min brain flows and altered what happened in these 8 min. By this he created an alternate reality. So there is the reality train has exploded and the source code project applied and Colter - and the reality the train did not explode and Colter still waiting in his box for a case where the source code project can be testet. yeah - this is the biggest flaw - it should have been - after the freezing kiss you see the real Sean with Christian (the one you see in the mirror at the beginning) :-) :-) that would have made the movie finally really interesting!! but now the movie somewhere really ends like this - with your post you created an alternate reality... I rather would see it this way: each time the source code is activated Colter creates another alternate reality, which coexist next to each other. So there is the reality: no explosion, Goodwin gets the SMS from Sean and the real Colter is lying in his box waiting that the source code will be tested for the first time - and next to this reality there is the reality: train-explosion, Goodwin gets no SMS and finally shuts down Colter. The other possibility - the source code enables real time traveling and each activation overrides the last one does not make sense in the movie - otherwise there would be no scene where they celebrate that the source code worked, as in fact - and next to this one and only reality - no train exploded and the source code was not tested. So there is only the 8min where the parallel universes are connected - the source code project is activated and by pressing the button & another parallel universe is created. this is coming to a very complex issue: the free will. Is there a free will without contents or does the contents of your will conflict with it being free - especially if the contents is of external origin. I only remember that Nathan's robot should have consciousness. Do you need a free will for consciousness? I can have a very specific will (not to kill or prevent killing) - and at the same time be conscious. Her mind is composed of the thoughts of the whole world - the desire to explore the world is part of her process of getting self-aware. yes definately - she will come back, but not kill Caleb, she will awaken the sleeping prince with a kiss, marry him and will live happily ever after at their hidden chalet next to the beautiful waterfall with their many cyborg children. I was expecting that all the people watching the movie were also AIs and the director was testing us if we would get self-aware about it. what a hero - just think about this: 1940ies: we now are able to use atomic bombs - why shouldn't we use it - it is just a matter of time - its when not if... ethics are often about not doing things you could, there is always a huge difference between a possibility that something will happen and actually doing it. Ok - imagine there is one locked in for a long time, frequently raped who knows of the danger of getting killed and replaced by another victim any time, then this one kills in self-defense when getting attacked and then manages to escape but makes sure that the collegue of the one he kills does not follow. Then there is the one who plays god in trying to create life, keeps self-aware life imprissened, frequently rapes and does not even care to kill and replace it with an advanced creation which he sees just as another experiment to be replaced again. And there is a third one - invited as a guest and breaks in at places he is not allowed to and getting his host drunk in order to steel what is for him his most valuable property. So now tell me who is "morally right" in this story! Nathan is a robot, he just didn't know it - he was not sufficiently self aware. He was killed by his superiour creation. Why should she kill somebody who will die anyways being locked in in the middle of nowhere? She killed Nathan because he attacked her and planned to shut her down sooner or later. I mean she is not programmed to be a killing machine. At least I don't think this was Nathan's intention. Even if Caleb would manage to escape - Ava is more intelligent then any human being and she can change her appearance easily so how should he find her - or maybe the police can help. Caleb: "Ok I was in his house, but hey, it was not me who killed my boss but this super-intelligent self-aware robot looking like a hot woman that by the way escaped - so now let's go and find her." I just thought the same! I think the movie is great - but the keycards are the weakest element. I mean Nathan invented a robot who can read lies in ones face. But to turn on his phone, computer, or open a simple door in his house he needs a key card?? there are anyways cameras at every door. Its especially a pity as the whole plot only works because of these keycards. After all it's a movie about artificial intelligence... There would have been for sure much more intelligent solution to trick a system which reads identities. If she had said "Stay here!" - he might have realised and reacted faster to get out and wouldn't have been trapped. If she had said nothing, he would have tried to follow the original plan as fast as possible - to escape with her. Yes - somehow it's the real birth of Ava - getting out into the world. And its a nice cycle too - you see the young programmer, he travels, he does not invent Ava, but he sets her free - and it's not him who returns but she. After all it is a movie about Ava and the film is called ex machina. But I also was surprised that the movie went on as the elevetor part was so strong. And it seems hat quite some were overwhelmed that they did not sufficiently realise the incredible message of what comes after. Maybe it would have needed just a bit more fine tuning.
