I finally rewatched Annie Hall. It’s quite a mature film, no wonder I didn’t “get” it when I was younger. Great film about relationships, feels very real. Glad I gave it another chance! Star Wars Holiday Special? He plays drums too! Watch Damsel in Distress! Yes, great performances all around. It’s really not a biography. It’s really a backstage theater drama. I went in with that mentality and thought it was a good film. Fassbender and Winslet are so incredible! No freaking way. Waltz is too whiny and high-pitched. Not remotely dangerous, physically. I think Mads Mikkelsen is a better choice. He is great in Hannibal. He can do accents well, is fit and has a menacing appearance and with a shaved head, looks a bit like Putin! So, many years ago, on a June 6, I casually asked around the office where I worked if anyone knew the significance of this day, back in 1944. I got a lot of blank stares. Nobody knew, NOBODY… except for one ex-marine who sat quietly and smiled at all the blank stares. Sad. If we don’t know or understand our history, we are doomed to repeat it. Vintage British films are far superior to modern films. Brief Encounter, Pygmalion, I Know Where I’m Going, Colonel Blimp, Black Narcissus, etc. Thanks for the recommendation! The trailer on youtube looks very good, I’ll try to catch this film. Bermuda Depths. Check it out! Vintage 70s TV movie! Her beauty was unparalleled. Plus, it’s quite a haunting film! I like the music a lot. The movie…not so much. It’s just too depressing. It’s a good film but I personally prefer feel-good escapist fare in my musicals, like the Astaire Rogers films. I would still list FotR soemwhere in my personal 50 favorite musicals, though. Just watched on Disney. My quick thoughts: Maria was very good! Natalie Wood is prettier and more wholesome, but otherwise the new Maria was pretty enough, could sing very well, and acted well. Anita was bland. Tony could sing (sort of, great voice no doubt but very poor emoting), but Ansel is a bad actor. Wooden, walks funny, has this arrogant smirk a lot, sorry I didn’t like him. Spielberg really opened up the world. It feels realistic. The 61 film was much more theatrical and used a more glorious sense of coloring. Which is better? Just depends on what the viewer wants in a musical. I prefer the slight artificiality of the 61 film. Choreography in the new film is inferior by a LONG shot to the 61 film. Oh, the dancing is on par, but what they’re dancing is unmemorable. Just look at what Spielberg did to the America number. Egads. I applaud him for staging many of the numbers very differently, to the point that his WSS feels like a different film than Wise’s version. Pacing is uneven. Nonmusical sequences sometimes just drop dead and drag, especially if Ansel is acting. Sorry, that’s a major miscast there, even if he has a good voice. Should have picked a Good actor and just dubbed the singing again. No subtitles? Bloody hell, it wasn’t just a few scenes here and there, it was virtually every single scene with a Puerto Rican! I don’t m8nd reading subtitles. spielberg lost a LOT of potential audience with this decision. Too bad. The new WSS isn’t bad. But I like the 61 version better. No contest. Go watch Victory at sea. It’s great! The score is very good, the narration is good, all the vintage footage is great. I was lucky enough to get the dvds in the $1 target bargain bin back in the day. I also liked the Battlefield series from PBS back in the 80’s. Good tactical stuff. Asom, I think he’s trolling you. Stop feeding. :) I’ve seen this and heard the original Suspense radio theater broadcasts. The film is good but the radio episode is MUCH better, as it is compact and very tense throughout. The film by comparison feels a bit bloated and loses some steam midway through. The visuals look great but don’t fit with the drama of the storyline. I Would have prefered black and white film stock. Good drama and great performances. I have the soundtrack LP. It is amazing music. The movie is very good too, although I have a problem with Geraldine Chaplin. She looks too much like her father in any movie I see her in, and it sort of breaks the illusion. Dr. zhivago is probably the last of the truly great Hollywood epic films. Excellent film! That’s not surprising, when you realize who the director is. Exceptional Hollywood product for the day. I just read the novel a day ago and saw the similar themes to Infinity War, plus the real-life Covid pandemic. Given that, I wonder if Inferno were filmed today, what its receptiion would be like? I think I’m going to watch the film today. Hm… ThatStarWarsGirl says the same thing. You’re not her, are you? I digress, back to topic. Given the state of today’s entertainment industry, I’m sure this new Middle Earth show on Amazon will be awful, just like a soft reboot that tries to appeal to a new generation of fans while antagonizing many older fans. Star Trek, Star Wars, Charlie Angels, Ghostbusters, 007, list goes on and on… Manhattan is one of the greatest american films of the past half century, IMO. The 70’s had some incredible films, and I personally love this the most of all Woody Allen’s films.
