Movies that gave you nightmares.

The Accused 1988. They made us watch this freshman year of college for a womens study class. I had to walk out and the teacher came out to ask, are you ok. No, I just turned 18 and your making us watch bar rape scenes.

reply

Paranormal Activity. I have a similar staircase leading up to my bedroom and there were thumping heavy footsteps coming up to get me. I was paralyzed with fear.

There is something about The Woman in Black (1989) that has always scared me for years. I haven’t had nightmares about it but I have woke up in the middle of the night thinking about it.

The Haunting (1963)
Poltergeist (1982)
The Blair Witch Project

The original Night of the Living Dead in black and white.

It was on TV one night when I was in college. I was alone in my dorm room and I couldn't finish watching it. I literally had a very bad dream that the zombies were coming and I had to get out of town. That was many years ago and I still remember the dream like I had it yesterday.

reply

That’s how the original haunting was for me. You know it’s a good movie if it has that kind of impact on you.

reply

Well it didn't help that it was filmed in the Pittsburgh area and they used some local newscasters in the movie to deliver the "news" about the zombies and I was IN Pittsburgh at the time!

For a few minutes I thought, "What if this is all a horrible coincidence and it's not a movie?"

I was afraid to open my door! lol That movie creeped me out big time.

reply

Oh that’s right! In my teen years I worked at a pizza shop in a town right outside of Pittsburgh and one of the older delivery drivers there was always talking about how he got to be an extra in it. I guess they must’ve used a lot of locals in it?
It sounds like you definitely got the full film experience of that flick!

reply

Interesting coincidence froggy! Then you probably remember a local newscaster and TV personality Bill Cardill. He hosted the Saturday night chiller theater as "Chilly Billy". He had a small role as himself in the movie. All of that made it too real for me. I didn't need the "full film experience"! ha ha

Another movie that I watched with all the lights on while holding a crucifix was 'The Exorcist'. Never had a nightmare about the actual movie. But I've had dreams about the devil. One time I had foot surgery. It was quite painful. I had a shot of Demerol and I was dreaming that Satan was in my living room. In the dream I thought I was awake and in my bedroom. I could hear loud noises coming from the living room and I just "knew" Satan was in there.

reply

At that time in my life, I think the only thing I was watching was Donkey Kong Country 3 while getting stoney with my friends. I don’t remember that newscaster at all.
Dreams of satan do not sound pleasant, especially if they feel real like that. Shall I call you a priest?😉
Blair Witch got to me the same way the night of the living dead got to you. My friends and I always went on excursions we called “fear missions”, where we would go seek out certain urban legends to see if they were real. One place we would go to was supposedly a witches grave, so when I watched Blair Witch it hit a little too close to home.. It didn’t help that my friends would make things that looked like those creepy stick figure things in the movie just to freak me out.

"Fear missions"? Yikes! I'm great with being not afraid in broad daylight. But night time is another story!

There's an old cemetery near my house where I walk my dog. A lot of people go there. It's like our "doggie park". Some people have told me stories about seeing "glowing lights" above the headstones at night. Or they claim to see other apparitions. I just nod my head thinking, "I'm sorry, but I don't believe in that stuff."

But sometimes when I'd walk my last dog ( a golden retriever) at night, she'd pull me in that direction and we'd walk through the cemetery. When it's a full moon, it's very easy to see your way around. So I'd let her go in that direction. However(!), when I was alone up there at night I would be totally creeped out! I was no longer the brave person that I was in broad daylight.I couldn't wait to get out of there.

I guess my bravery depends on how light it is and if other people are around.

reply

I don’t think I’d enjoy fear missions quite as much now. It’s much easier being brave when you’re a stupid teenager. I considered myself invincible at that age.
I don’t necessarily believe in ghosts and the like, I just believe anything is possible so i don’t rule them out.
I love goldens. I love all dogs, they’re kinda my thing. You said your last dog, do you no longer have one?

reply

Well, Sally was my "previous dog", a beautiful golden retriever. I missed her so much when I lost her a few years ago. My son "lent" me his doberman Sasha. She had spent a lot of time with me anyway while he was in school and working part time.

So now Sasha has become my dog by default. He has other dogs. He took Sasha home a few times, but she doesn't like it there. His girlfriend (now his wife) wouldn't allow Sasha on the furniture and Sasha was NOT happy about that!

People see me walking her and tell me that I have nothing to be afraid of. No one will bother a Doberman. If they only knew! She's a big sissy. My cats intimidate her. But it is nice to have her there when I hear strange noises at night. I used to record a show called Celebrity Ghost Stories. I think that's what it was called.

I don't know WHY, but I'd watch it late at night and if I heard a noise downstairs I would be afraid to go see what it was. It was usually just one of my cats knocking something over.

That movie did it for me, too. I saw it in the theater when I was young, with my older brother and his friends. For months afterwards I thought I saw people coming after me from my clothes closet.

Didn't help that my folks owned a funeral home and we lived in the apartment above it :-D

The Birds, although I can't say that it gave me nightmares, it has left me just a wee bit spooked whenever I see a large gathering of birds.

I think Nightmare on Elm Street produced a few nightmares for me. I was a kid when I first watched it so it messed with me a bit haha.
