Reminder

Please do not use the 'report' feature for reporting people you don't agree with or that you had an argument with and called each other names.

That's not what it's there for.

A moderator that looks at both sides before making judgment. A moderator that understands the difference between opinion, trolling, and harassment. A moderator calling out overly sensitive people crying wolf and hitting the panic button. Dude, if you ran for president I would vote for you!

reply

Thank you.

You are right that some people are far too sensitive and don't realize the resentment they cause in others who just like to get on with people and can make up their own minds as to what is acceptable or not. Mostly these people are all about talking inclusive, yet they exclude anybody that doesn't fit in their world view bubble. Some have a mindset not too dissimilar to The Borg.

Resistance is futile.

I've been a moderator on multiple forums ... only 2 things matter: is the poster breaking site rules and is the poster behaving in a way that would drive desirable posters away. Many forums ignore the latter part and that's why many forums have disappeared from the internet.

reply

Exactly. As it should be. Just not here though.

Not many

You have a job where you have to deal with a lot of garbage. Thanks for what you do.

reply

Thanks.

You have no idea the amount of garbage we have to deal with in the report box. It would be nice to show everyone the sort of posts that get reported so you can understand why we shake our heads so much in puzzlement at why something was reported.

I may have reported someone once a long time ago, I think for what I felt was a lot lying and nasty name calling. I was pretty incensed by it, but I ended up getting a warning, iirc. After being more experienced here, I figure it's the Wild West so I try not to be too triggered.

reply

I never reported anyone and the only time I pressed the Ignore button was by accident on Fred.

Mod4 can confirm.

Im just cool like that.

That's an excellent way to win the game :)

I got a solution - you're a DICK!

ITT: Beleaguered Mod tries to instruct cancel-culture fanatics on responsible reporting to no avail.

Smile at yourself in the mirror for me Mod4. Your efforts are appreciated.

Thanks. Apologies for late reply as I have been in the UK for the past 3 days.

Reading your replies to this thread has made me appreciate this site even more.
Thank you for your service, Moderator4.

For anyone who is questioning what the Report button is for: Flaming

Take heed to the last two sentences!

https://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-flaming.htm

“Flaming is the often deliberate act of posting or writing messages on Internet bulletin boards and message groups that have the intent of insulting or creating dissent within a group. An Internet flame is often filled with coarse language *(profanity)* and personal insults *(ad hominem attacks)*. It is meant to hurt people’s feelings, get them fired up, and not to further conversation on a personal issue. It is never conversational, but it may be meant to upset an entire group, provoking conversation about someone’s flame or on the practice of flaming in general.

At other times, egotism causes a person to practice flaming. A person may feel that his or her opinion is the only valid one on the subject and state so in an insulting way. This may result in flame wars, where people on two different sides of an issue state opinions only and insult the person who “started the war.” Flame wars may only be resolved when the people involved decide that multiple opinions on subjects are to be expected.

Some people theorize that flaming is common on the Internet because there is relative anonymity in Internet posting. People who flame are not that likely to actually insult people in person. Flaming on the Internet offers a degree of protection not likely to be afforded in a face-to-face conversation. On the other hand, people with the right spyware can find out the identity of others, so it’s simply not a good or safe practice. It’s considered in most cases, a grave violation of netiquette to practice flaming.“

*My edit. BTW, our Mod Squad is the greatest with a thankless job!
