a disturbing book you read
the rape of nanking by iris chang.
shareI have a book or 2 about it also but I’ll have to check the authors. Unit 731 is rough too.
shareYeah, that's a tough one. I did read a book on it years ago, and I've seen Men Behind the Sun.
shareI do remember you saying you’ve seen Men Behind the Sun. I love weird stuff but that’s one I’m just not interested in seeing, even though I’ve read about the actual events. 😬
shareYeah, I would never recommend watching it.
shareName some others you wouldn’t recommend for the same reason and I’ll tell you if I’ve seen them.
shareI think the most obvious one I'd not recommend is A Serbian Film, but also The Girl Next Door (2007), it's a little more tame than the true story from what I remember. Apartment 407/Selling Isobel (2016). That one stars the woman who it happened to. I think that's why that one bothered me. Knowing that she was reliving it all while filming.
shareONLY ONE I HAVE SEEN IS A SERBIAN FILM...I THOUGHT IT WAS BORING AND STUPID.
shareI've seen it twice. The first time I was in a bad state of mind and it really made me cry. I had to turn it off twice. The second time I was fine, but it still makes me really sad. Not as sad as Grave of the Fireflies. That one made me cry when I thought about it days after.
shareI haven’t heard of your last two but I, of course, know of A Serbian Film’s reputation. That’s another one I won’t watch.
shareI used to read a lot of true crime books, and there have been a few that stuck with me.
One was Two of a Kind: The Hillside Stranglers by Darcy O'Brien
bianchi and buono - the cousins from hell
shareYeah, when I was in Jr High, and I'd already read Helter Skelter, and thought it would be simialr....yeah, I wasn't prepared for all the rape. I didn't even really know who they were. I found the book at a used book store in Victoria when I was on a band trip.
shareFatal Vision by Joe McGinniss - it's the riveting account of the Jeffrey MacDonald murders.
shareUsually the only disturbing books were about real psycho types because it’s hard to believe anyone could act that way: Helter Skelter( Vincent Bugliosi,) The I-5 Killer and The Stranger Beside Me (both by Ann Rule) and Mindhunter (John Douglas) amongst others…
True crime is way scarier than horror fiction!
I forget the author, many books have the title in one way or another, but I'll go with "Unit 731."
The Japanese were absolutely brutal during WWII, not only towards civilians, but also POW's.
Fiction - On the Beach
Non Faction - Helter Skelter
