"AGENDA" much?

this "article" (opinion actually) on MSNBC front page, is obviously slanted based on headline and content. I don't really care about that.

Note that it is interesting that they DISABLED the COMMENTS section for it. Lame. Shows their true colors. I notice they disable comments on many of the controversial articles.... because, no one wants to face TRUTH? What normal people think?

"Katelyn Burns" has a penis.

I can see why he'd be upset with the movie.

I want to see it for the title alone.

reply

it looks like it could be pretty funny

reply

This dude wrote a review saying that they refuse to see it and then proceeds to bash everything that's wrong with film that they haven't seen?!?!

reply

AND no COMMENTS allowed. SAFE SPACE!! I NEED A SAFE SPACE ON the very very public internet. those idiots

Opinion piece written by

MSNBC Columnist. Katelyn Burns is a freelance journalist based in New England. She was the first openly transgender Capitol Hill reporter in U.S. history.

Who also admits to not having seen the movie.

It’s a male power fantasy in that it depicts out-of-shape, unathletic men constantly dunking on women.

False, the men in this movie were a state championship high school basketball team.

The movie takes two separate ideas — how individuals define their gender and how we structure trans participation in organized sports — and dishonestly conflates them.

It doesn't, because we are pretty far from having a universal compromise on this. There are plenty of men that simply identify, and they are able to compete as women. It still happens at the high school level, as the author admitted.

Lying lets them ignore what a gender transition does to a trans woman’s body. Even experts opposed to trans women participating in women's sports agree that athletic performance is severely degraded once trans women start estrogen treatment. Their concern is whether athletic performance is degraded enough to erase all alleged biological advantages.

This issue isn't even brought up in the movie, because there aren't any actual trans people in the movie. But the simple answer is that it doesn't. Hormone Therapy will degrade performance, but the effects of growing up as male has permanent effect on bone structure, bone density, musculature, etc. Which is why trans women still dominate even after transitioning.

Also why do these people focus so much on hormone therapy, when they claim there isn't an advantage? This person argued that women at a rec center would dribble circles around these men. The actors themselves said that they would take any women in 3 on 3 basketball, so take them up on it.

gah. didnt wish you to read it. sorry for that. :D I was whining about them turning OFF COMMENTING on their page. :) they are so weak. "Wurds hurt! Waaa waaa" :D

I know, it is so annoying. This whole "words are violence" bullshit has gotten out of hand. There's a huge difference between someone being cruel and insulting towards you, and someone punching you in the face or beating you up. I know, because I've been in both scenarios, the second one involving blood. They are definitely not the same.

reply

Take this over to the politics board, for Christ sakes.

reply

Which POLITICAL system does any of this reference exactly?

reply

It doesn't matter, it's political. Take it there.

reply

It’s really weird when they do that. Very censor-y. Either allow comments across the board or dont.

reply

This really belongs on the politics board.

reply

Politics thread.

Not Politics.

I very respectfully ask you to reconsider.

Two right-wing political figures make an anti-LGBTQ propaganda film and the entire linked article discusses politics:

"the latest awful propaganda the conservative media has fashioned into a weapon against trans people."

"the film is soaking up praise from right-wing critics"

"like all the transphobic messages from the far right, is a sweeping lie."

"bullied by conservative lawmakers and media into suddenly cutting off treatment to older trans teens"

"the conflation and the lie are central to selling political laypeople on these bans on trans women in women’s sports. Conservatives need you to believe"

"Conservatives love to pretend that thousands of kids are getting whisked off to gender clinics to get immediate, even prepubescent, castrations. That’s another lie, of course."

"Conservatives need you to believe that doctors are constantly circling, always looking for half a chance to chop off a kid’s genitals."

"public misinformation campaign run by conservative activists"

"Conservatives often claim to be “defenders of reality” in the transgender debate. But if that were truly the case, then why do they have to constantly lie about trans issues? It’s they who are manipulating what people perceive as reality in order to drive hate against a minority they want erased."

"At the heart of “Lady Ballers,” like all the transphobic messages from the far right, is a sweeping lie."

The topic is comment censorship. The fact that comment censorship touches political issues (along with many others) does not mean that it cannot be posted here. We do not parse and police speech to that extent.

If you see it and immediately recognize it as something you don't want to see, skip it.

reply

thanks. and sorry for the hassle. it IS about the comment being turned off

reply

Maybe it's because I'm not looking from the US but I don't see comments on any "articles" I looked at on MSNBC. Not just this one.

reply

Most I see allow comments, I'm in the USA, and regular average people post up showing how much the silent majority is still smart and normal. It's very refreshing and encouraging.

Maybe they are only off on opinion pieces? It is hard to tell the Sideview now since most day STORY BY... hard separating fact of news from fiction.

reply

Well you knew it was an opinion piece, and it says right at the top that it is an opinion piece. Plus it's on a site that is well known for having a leftist bias. Maybe I am being optimistic about the intelligence of readers online, but after the Fox News Tucker Carlson slander case where the lawyers argued not to expect facts from him, wouldn't most people understand that corporate news networks are all about clicks and not actual news at all?

I don't know. But I do know that most of the major news sites in Canada disabled comments years ago because of the cesspool they became.

reply

right. msn and cnn had disabled comments understandably. but they are kind of back on msn - apparently only on some thing.

news has become a competative trash pile instead of truth. so sad, now that we we have the widest, most open options of communications ever created by man... we have to make up garbage for dollars

reply

News should never have become about ratings. Yet here we are.

reply

THIS IS NOT ABOUT THE COMMENTS BEING DISABLED...YOU LINK YOUR SLANTED POLITICAL ARTICLE...THEN YOU CAREFULLY CRAFT YOUR POST TO SHOVE YOUR OPINION OF THE OTHER SIDE ONTO GENERAL DISCUSSION...YOU DID A GOOD ENOUGH JOB THAT IT DOESN'T QUALIFY TO BE REMOVED...BUT WE ALL KNOW WHAT THE INTENTION OF THE THREAD WAS AND IS.
