So, explain to me: why was the slogan for this turd “ID4”? Really: justify it to me.

Was it ANYTHING other than a cocaine-fueled ad man’s “brainstorm” about how to link this with the USA’s Fourth of July celebration with a movie that does not have “4” in the title? Or did the meeting go something like, “We can just call it ‘ID,’ it sounds like you’re getting carded before that let you into a club.” Guy (brushing powder off his nose, having been graduated from a Mexican college) “I know! Let’s call it ‘ID4.’ That brings the number 4 into it, so the slogan has more letters AND a meaningless number!”

There are no limits to human stupidity.

no need to explain to someone who thinks this is a turd

Username checks out.

Independence Day is awesome.

Only the most popular movies have nicknames, when "Terminator 2" was a huge hit, people were actually calling it "T2" in real life.

So I presume the marketing department was trying to create and impression of extreme popularity, by giving it a nickname before it because popular. Well, it *was* popular.

reply

That’s my take on it as well, but it was a ham-fisted and sneer-worthy attempt and I enjoy scoffing at it at every opportunity.

Moreover, “T2” was the second Terminator movie, which explains the “2.” “iD4” was the first of its line. There is no excuse on Earth for the “4.” They were obviously reaching for “the 4th of July,” and counting on audience stupidity to carry the ball over the goal line. I am not stupid. I spit on that title.

I think you are forgetting that it was marketed that way outside of the US as well. Perhaps they thought that us non Americans were so clueless that we thought it might refer to some other country's independence day that didn't happen on the 4th of July?

reply

Of course, there is Bastille Day in France, 14 July, which our Boston French Library celebrates annually. I figured the used the moniker universally, goodness knows to what effect. The whole movie was sloppy, lazy and condescending, a real insult to its audience. “We’re gonna infiltrate an extraterrestrial space craft, get into an OS we have NEVER SEEN and load it with a lethal virus.”

Yeah. I know. “It’s only a movie.” Right. It’s only a movie that at its every level is telling me to go fuck myself and encouraging the further decay of our species that results in things like 123Guy.

Do you want to suck all the joy out of life, OP? Or rather, R_Kane?

reply

The irony of a screen name of "R Kane" shitting on the ham fistedness of a nickname.

reply

What does it mean?

reply

Clearly a play on words with the term "Arcane." Which I have no problem with, I just think it's weird somebody with that screen name would feel confident enough to go on a troll rant about a nickname.

reply

I see. I was thinking the "Kane" would be like the "Cain" of Cain and Abel, a complete moron who slays his half-decent brother Abel.

reply

Check this guy's posting history, he comes off as a condescending prick in virtually every single comment...

reply

Do I(?)

reply

I'm talking about R_Kane...

reply

Oh, sorry, I thought you responded to me.

reply

You're a troll. Everyone here gets that. You're too obvious about it.

I challenge you troll. Do you dare give us your top ten movies that YOU consider good so we can judge for ourselves whether you actually have any taste in movies at all?

Show us whether you are man or boy.

reply

No one needs to explain shit to you, obviously you are retarded. So Fuck You @ASSHOLE.

reply

More ignorant pseudointellectualism 🙄

reply

Yes I totally agree with you about this. I remember in the lead up to this film back in the 90’s I was trying to figure out why it said ID4 on the posters, it was a bit weird.
