I felt no remorse for any of the characters...[Spoilers]

And would'n't have been sad if none of them survived. Not so much that I'm morbid or desensitized but the fact that none of the characters in this had any sort of likability. They were all extremely stupid...even for horror movie standards.

reply

I cared if they died, but the whole movie is stupid and a waste of time.

reply

Its a cheaply made horror movie! I liked it, the mom did a great job. So did the sister. The rest of the cast was meh.

reply

Agreed. I couldn't identify with any of them, and it was so estrogen laced- even the "boy" was feminine. I was rooting for the lesser of the evils, that is to say the demons.

reply

even the "boy" was feminine.

That cat fight he had with his sister, hesitating to help out his Aunt when she was being overpowered by his possessed mother.....total bitch.

reply

Apparently the “boy” was played by a trans boy, aka a girl, which explains a lot.

This means the entire main cast was female, make of that what you will.

reply

I almost never feel remorse for any characters. So it is what it is. I didn't give a damn about the people in any of the other ED films getting possessed and fucked up.

I also wouldn't say the characters were stupid. I feel like people say that about every single horror movie. Make characters very intelligent and give them an easy route for escape and the movie doesn't happen. Just suspend some disbelief and enjoy the carnage.

reply

Same.
Mother: Character trait= Never smiles. Her husband left her (escaped), so men ain't s**t. We can all bond with that! Yay!

Teenage girl: Character trait= Never smiles. Unnecessarily mean. She treats a neighbour kid who's inviting her to a movie marathon like garbage, and slams door in his face. Trashing on 15 year old boys is funny because men didn't let women vote a hundred years ago. Yay Boss Girl!
It was like something from Mean Girls, except in 2023 she's not the mean girl, she's one of the leads and we now celebrate this behaviour. But it's all OK because she tickled the little girl after being mean to her.

Aunty: Character trait= Snarky, fluent in sarcasm. Never smiles. Men did her bad, so we can all relate! Pregnant. Deciding whether or not to ab0rt.
Needlessly scares little sister in bathroom. Instead of making it a joke and consoling the little girl, the Aunty makes it all about her and the little girl ends up doing consoling after being given a dose of PTSD.

Brother: Never smiles= a "DJ". No personality. Plays music so loud the walls shake, so screw the neighbours. It's a tight family bond because he tickled the little girl one time.
Has an ounce of testosterone left in his body after suffering years of emasculation With that last vestige of testosterone, ruins it for everybody showing risky behaviour and not listening to his sister (women are always right), finding the book, and reading it, after being told not to by his sister (because women are always right). The sister did say to get rid of it in the morning, after being adamant that it should go immediately.

Little girl: The only likeable character.

I get it, in horror movies there are bound to be characters intentionally unlikeable. But the movie wanted us to like these people. We were supposed to be on their side.

reply

Spot on.

reply

I'm surprised there were no black people in this movie.

But yes, the aunt and the youngest kid were the only 2 characters I liked. The gender neutral look of the older sister was annoying af. But at least there's a trans kid, so heavens be praised!

Movie critics today:

Minus points:
Poor script and dialogue, hackneyed story, boring, vaudeville-level acting in a serious drama. Pedestrian filmmaking, by the numbers shots with not an ounce of creativity. Failures on every level of filmmaking.

Plus points:
There's a thicc black lesbian queen who is transitioning, in a wheelchair with MS and motor neurone disease. She is a CEO boss lady and all the men fear her. She routinely makes men look stupid and humiliates them with her sharp tongue and crispy quips. And you just know she's a democrat and hates Trump!
There's also a single mom making it on her own because she don't need no man, after learning to "survive" when the "deadbeat" dad ran off. We can all relate! Men just suck! You go, Queen!

11 out of 5.

Give it all the Oscars.

reply

Did you want there to be black people in this movie, or are you glad their wasn't.

reply

Don't care either way, as long as they aren't cast purely for the sake of 'diversity' (oh brother).

Was just surprised to see there were no blacks in a 2023 movie. Not to worry - Netflix will probably do a sequel or spin off at some stage and will compensate for this blasphemy!

reply

Interesting. You don't care either way, yet it was the first thing you mentioned.

reply

I was neither criticizing nor praising, just commenting on it because it's very unusual in this day and age, esp. in a fairly well known franchise that is not super low on budget either. I did post my opinion on the movie in a different thread before.

Movies like this were common in the 90s (having an all white or black cast, no black / POC etc.) and before, but not so much nowadays.

reply

Yes and the thing is, I don’t mind diversity at all - I used to think nothing of watching an all black cast in a movie and enjoying it .. and rewatching it. These days though you can tell a casting director was like “ok in this scene we need 2 brown men and an Asian guy(or girl) and then we need a gay couple here and a gay sex scene involving an interracial couple!” And this is just annoying to watch at this point as it’s so manufactured

reply

You got him, lol

reply

Since when were the Evil Dead movies about likable characters?

reply

Yeah exactly. I don't get this post. The movie is about horror carnage not the characters

reply

I agree, there wasn't a single character in there that I liked. But I enjoyed the story and the carnage. Well acted, well directed, convincingly done.

reply

Yeah I was 30 minutes in and felt nothing for the characters! The little girl I obviously didn’t want anything to happen to but only because she’s very young. The other characters were just meh

I’m so damn desensitized to movies these days . A few days done the road I’ll have completely forgotten this movie
