The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Most of you seem to know a lot more about movies than I do. So what is your opinion of this movie?

The first time I saw it my reaction was to hate it and confusedly ask "what the heck did I just watch"? Then it kept pulling me back in and I watched it over and over again in my young adulthood, and grew to love it. Now I've watched it so much I would get bored watching it ever again except once a year, I have it on in the background on Halloween night while I hand out candy to trick or treaters. And of course I have to sing a few of the songs.

So is it a good movie, or crap, or both?

reply

It's both. It's wonderful, glorious, campy entertainment crap that I absolutely adore.

I had a similar reaction the first time I watched it, but I was also probably 12 or 13, and was just like "what the hell??" And like you, I was drawn to watch it again, and then again....

It's such a blast to see it in the theatre, and I still try to go when I can.

reply

I've never seen it in the theater but have always wanted to. Which character do you dress as when you go?

reply

I havent dressed up in years, but in the past I've mostly gone as Magenta, but I've also gone as Janet

reply

If I ever go I would dress as Janet. I like to sing her songs the best, but also in my mind I would be signaling to the others that I was a "virgin" to acting it out in the theater. 😁

reply

It's fantastic and one of my all time favourite films. Tim Curry is perfect here and the rest of the cast are great too. I love the songs and costumes. 10/10 is my rating.

reply

Yes, perfect is not an understatement for Tim Curry in this film. It's the role he was born for.

reply

I never saw the whole thing but I like the soundtrack, I think I may own it on vinyl. The sight of a man in sexy lady wear scared me right the fuck off as a young kid so I never watched the entire thing.

*Im NOT being homophobic, I just stay away from dudes in lingerie and stuff like that

reply

Yes the soundtrack is a lot of fun. I sometimes pull up one of the songs on YouTube and sing along when I get in the mood to. You don't necessarily have to watch the movie to enjoy the songs. 🙂

reply

I like the music a lot😄

reply

Same. I wasn't really introduced to "gay/trans culture" when I first saw it & seeing guys in lingerie weirded the fuck outta me.

Have not seen it as an adult. Mostly cause I dont vibe with Musicals in general.

reply

Yeah, not chucking rocks over here but that’s not my scene.

The music is very good though👍

reply

Well definitely check it out. I'm sure someone has definitely made a Spotify playlist of it.

reply

For what it's worth this movie is not actually about gay/trans culture to me. It's more just about sexual awakening in general. And yes the music is worth checking out. 🙂

reply

Well, I've not seen it since I was a preteen. Like 2 decades ago.

reply

I saw it for the first time as an adult and at first it still completely weirded me out so I completely understand!

reply

And a part two to this question if anyone sees this. Does anyone think the first half of this movie is better than the second half or do you think it's equally entertaining all the way through?

reply

Saw it three or four times in a theater with audience participation (not me). I had the good fortune to see it at one of the best venues to do so, The Waverly Theater in Greenwich Village: "The Waverly was also known as the original home of the midnight audience-participation screenings of the movie version of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which ran there for many years, spawning similar showings in other cities."(Wikipedia)

It's more than people dressing up and getting on stage. People in the audience respond to lines in the movie. And there are other things like early in the movie there is a rainstorm and someone will shoot water sprinkles over the audience. It really is two different things, seeing it with or without the participation. SO much a better experience with.

As to 1st half vs 2nd half, It's been too long since I've seen it to say.

reply

I had an opportunity once to go to an audience participation viewing and chickened out. I regret it but life is not over yet! Maybe I'll have another chance.

And that's really cool that you got to see it in the birthplace of audience participation viewings.

reply

I'm not big on participating and IIRC there was no pressure to do so. Just enjoy the show!

reply

It's a fun movie. Try to see it in the theater if you can.

reply

I'll keep my eyes open for opportunities. This is the time of year when it could happen.

reply

I dislike it but it's a cult flick.

It's intentionally bad with catchy writing.

Don't expect me to watch it though. Tim knows why:

reply

Just go to that bathroom for that part! Imo, literally every other song from RH(P)S blows it away...

reply

I'm no fan. I used to own it and decided that on the third viewing, It wasn't for me. I dropped it off at half price books after that.

reply

Love it! It was one of the defining movies of my late teens, we would head into NYC pretty much every weekend to see it at the 8th St. Playhouse(https://ephemeralnewyork.wordpress.com/tag/8th-street-playhouse/) with the live floor show...
